TELUS-Rotman Canadian IT Security Study ... - TELUS Talks Business

Rotman and TELUS have worked together to develop a better understanding of the security landscape in Canada for the past four years by developing the TELUS-Rotman Canadian IT Security Study.? At that point, IT security managers in Canada had to rely on evidence based off of US or global studies. In developing security strategies, Canadian security managers were therefore forced to implicitly assume that the Canadian security landscape was similar to that in the US or internationally. After four years of study we know this is in fact not the case, which in part explains the extensive demand and anticipation for the annual release of the annual Rotman TELUS study.

Our approach in previous years was a quantitative one, meaning that the research team from Rotman and TELUS created a questionnaire that was filled out online by IT security professionals. The research team then analyzed these responses to better understand the security landscape across organizations in Canada, covering all geographies and industries. In total we have surveyed over 2,000 organizations over the past four years. Our findings are summarized here: 10 things we know today that we didn?t know 4 years ago. Key learnings from the TELUS-Rotman Joint Study on Canadian IT Security Practices by Walid.Hejazi

We are in the midst of holding roundtable discussions in Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal.? By undertaking a series of roundtable discussions with IT professionals and one on one interviews with executive IT security leaders we will be able to gain in depth insights into key issues and developments in IT security. One of the key benefits of this qualitative approach is that it will allow IT security professionals to tell us their concerns in an open and less structured way.? This is in contrast to answering questions from a structured survey that was prepared by the Rotman-TELUS research team.? Participants will be able to communicate the issues that keep them awake at night, and what strategies they have or are contemplating deploying to overcome these concerns. The insights ? or the story- can be much richer and in depth than can be achieved from a quantitative based survey.? These face to face interactions allow us to understand better where the passion and concerns really are ? something this is more difficult to obtain from a survey filled out on line.

I am very much looking forward to these roundtable and interview discussions to confirm key trends in IT Security in Canada, discuss how IT Security business decisions are made, as well as discover what Canadian organizations are doing to address growing threats associated with mobile security - BYOD , social networking and cloud computing.?? We hope you are excited about this research and the final report as much as I am.
