Obamacare's New Benefit Summary Allows Consumers to Untangle ...

Ever get confused about what exactly is and isn?t covered by your health insurance? Health insurance summaries were often complex, confusing documents that people just avoided. Some were so poorly written that they needed a lawyer to explain them.

Thanks to the Affordable Care Act, all that has changed. As of Sept. 23, health insurers are required to provide a ?Summary of Benefits and Coverage? that makes it easier for consumers to make important choices and to understand the inner workings of their health plans.

The Summary of Benefits and Coverage gives important information about co-pays and deductibles, what procedures are included, information about networks, out-of-pocket expenses and real world examples of how coverage works. The summary must be provided by all health insurers except Medicare plans.

For folks who?d like a tutorial in how to use the summary, Consumer Reports has prepared a helpful guide. You can download a copy here.
