Wake Up...to Live!: Is Your Communication Style Insulting or Inspiring?

Is Your Communication Style Insulting or Inspiring?

Is your communication style insulting, belittling, or inspiring? ?When writing comments in the first person, it guarantees me not to exclude myself from what is being discussed. ?Thus, I take on the responsibility to what I write or say. ?I don't direct the comment to someone else. ?Rather I try to influence. ?For instance, "when I am not expressing my own creative potential, I focus on blame in a relationship instead of?focusing?on creativity." ?I take on the responsibility personally.

On the other hand, if I write in third person, I direct the comment to others so that now I am more of a judge and?juror than someone trying to support and uplift. ?For example, "when people aren't expressing their own potential, they focus blame on the relationship instead of focusing on their creativity." ?Do you see the difference? ?Do you feel the difference?

Many of us say and believe we are inspiring others into awareness; but when it really comes down to it, we are judging others; we are not inspiring others. ?I do this myself probably more often than I should. ?Here's another example; but this one is in second person: "As you waste your breath complaining about life, someone out there is breathing their last." ?How do you feel when you read this? ?To me, this one sounds as though the person writing is belittling me and pointing fingers; rather than inspiring me.

Of course, there is a time and place to write and talk in second and third person for sure. ?And, to get a point across, sometimes people need a wake up call with the second person - kind of in your face direct wake up call. ?Third person may be a little more gentle. ?Nonetheless, it is still talking about you and me rather than about the writer.

Why did I write about first, second, and third person pronouns? ?For sometime now, I have been scanning through posts from Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter. ?For a while, I couldn't understand why I would get agitated and then "hide" certain posts. ?Me, the curious cat, needed to uncover why this subtle physiological arousal was happening. ?Always interested in communication and relationships especially after reading Marshall B. Rosenberg's books,?Speak Peace in a World of Conflict and Nonviolent Communication, I started to figure out that it is not what is being said but how it is being said. ?Thus, some posts would inspire me and others would agitate me.

To sum up, is your communication style insulting, pointing fingers, or inspiring? ?Just remember that you, me, and they must remember the importance of communication - tone of voice, pronouns and words used, and physiology expressed. ?Additionally, how we communicate things may be more important than what we communicate depending on the purpose of the communication.

A note: This is quite a simplified explanation in regards to communication; but it brings out the basics. ?Using the various pronouns can also be very inspiring. ?So give your words some thought before you verbally express them. ?Or, rather, have your purpose in mind about the conversation you desire. ?Setting an intention, ultimately, will set the tone of the conversation.

Boston College Hockey: Will BU's Jack Parker Ever Catch Jerry York? #York925

Jerry York is on top of college hockey. Will the head coach of Boston College's arch rival ever catch him?

Boston University hockey coach Jack Parker, who gets his fair share of ribbing around these parts, was gracious in speaking about coach Jerry York following the Terriers December 1 loss to BC. York had tied the all-time wins record with the 5-2 win over the Eagles' arch rivals.

"He deserves all the accolades. It's hard for people to believe this, because he's been around so long and been so successful, and he's won so many games, but I still don't think he gets the credit he deserves.

"He's a very good coach who's run great programs at three different places, and has done an unbelievable job making this program the best it's ever been. This is a place where they've had two other coaches who've won 500 games. It's had a lot of good hockey for a long, long time. And he's the best they've ever had."

York and Parker's careers will forever be tied together. Not just because they coach at opposite ends of the Green Line as part of college hockey's greatest rivalry, but because Parker sits third on the all-time win list with 886. That total is good for second best of all active coaches behind only York.

The question is can Parker ever catch York for take sole possession of the all-time wins record?

It's not going to be easy as York is winning games at an almost absurd clip these days. It took York over five seasons to earn victories 1-100 at Clarkson and over four full seasons at Bowling Green to earn 100 more. The amount of time between York's 825th and 925th victories at Boston College? A little over three full seasons.

Over the last four full seasons from 2008-09 to 2011-12, York has won 27.5 games per season. To put this in perspective, the 19 year coach of the Eagles has accomplished that feat just one other time on the Heights, and five other times while at Bowling Green:

At Bowling Green:

1982-83 to 1985-86: 27.75 wins/season
1983-84 to 1986-87: 29 wins/season
1984-85 to 1987-88: 28 wins/season
1985-86 to 1988-89: 29.25 wins/season
1986-87 to 1989-90: 28.5 wins/season

At Boston College:

1997-98 to 2000-01: 29.25 wins/season

I'm under no delusion that BC will keep winning at its current pace this season, but with the Eagles winning 80 percent of all games, York is on track to eclipse the 30 wins/season four-year average for the first time ever, which is almost unfair.

Packer has eclipsed the 30 wins/season four-year average just once in his career, winning 30.25 games/season over the four years from 1993-94 to 1996-97 which included the 1995 National Championship. In recent years, however, Parker has slowed the pace of victory -- winning just 18, 19 and 23 games in the three seasons after a 35 victory season capped by another title in 2009. Recent four years averages for the Terriers head coach:

2005-06 to 2008-09: 25 wins/season
2006-07 to 2009-10: 23 wins/season
2007-08 to 2010-11: 22.75 wins/season
2008-09 to 2011-12: 23.75 wins/season

York, 39 victories clear of Parker, has been averaging 2-3 more wins a year over a four-year period the last three seasons. Should the two coaches continue winning at roughly the same clip, it would likely take Parker almost two years of coaching after York retires to catch the sport's all-time wins leader.

Given the way York has swung the momentum in the Green Line Rivalry in favor of Boston College in recent years and the way he has restocked future recruiting classes with a near embarrassment of riches, it's hard to see Parker catching York.

NYT's Chris Buckley Expelled From China - Business Insider

wen jiabao

New York Times journalist Chris Buckley was forced to leave China today after his annual media accreditation and residence visa were denied, John Garnaut of the Sydney Morning Herald reports.

While the official reason behind Buckley's apparent expulsion were not apparent, it is widely believed that Buckley was forced to leave due to a Times expose written by David Barboza that revealed the vast family fortunes of outgoing Chinese premier Wen Jiabao.

According to tweets from Beijing-based writer and Baidu employee Kaiser Kuo, Barboza and other members of the Times staff in China have not had problems with new visas.

Wen has strongly denied the accusations that his family were worth over $2 billion, and his lawyers had hinted at legal action against the Times. The New York Times' website has been blocked in China since the article.

A similar article about incoming President Xi Jinping's family finances resulted in Bloomberg being blocked, and reports of death threats against the authors.

Buckley, an Australian, had been working as a journalist in China for 12 years. His entire family were forced to leave the country. Garnaut describes Buckley as having a "a reputation in China for balance and rigour".

Earlier this year Al Jazeera's Melissa Chan was also refused a new visa for work in China. It is widely believed it was due to the strength of her reporting from the country.

For Senate leaders, is a 'cliff' deal a mission impossible?

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Following a Friday meeting with congressional leaders, an impatient and annoyed President Barack Obama said it was "mind boggling" that Congress has been unable to fix a "fiscal cliff" mess that everyone has known about for more than a year.

He then dispatched Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, a Democrat, and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, a Republican, on a mind-boggling mission: coming up with a bipartisan bill to break the "fiscal cliff" stalemate in the most partisan and gridlocked U.S. Congress of modern times - in about 48 hours.

Reid and McConnell, veteran tacticians known for their own long-running feud, have been down this road before.

Their last joint venture didn't turn out so well. It was the deal in August 2011 to avoid a U.S. default that set the stage for the current mess. That effort, like this one, stemmed from a grand deficit-reduction scheme that turned into a bust.

But they have never had the odds so stacked against them as they try to avert the "fiscal cliff" - sweeping tax increases set to begin on Tuesday and deep, automatic government spending cuts set to start on Wednesday, combined worth $600 billion.

The substantive differences are only part of the challenge. Other obstacles include concerns about who gets blamed for what and the legacy of distrust among members of Congress.

Any successful deal will require face-saving measures for Republicans and Democrats alike.

"Ordinary folks, they do their jobs, they meet deadlines, they sit down and they discuss things, and then things happen," Obama told reporters. "If there are disagreements, they sort though the disagreements. The notion that our elected leadership can't do the same thing is mind-boggling to them."

CORE DISAGREEMENT

The core disagreement between Republicans and Democrats is tough enough. It revolves around the low tax rates first put in place under Republican former President George W. Bush that expire at year's end. Republicans would extend them for everyone. Democrats would extend them for everyone except the wealthiest taxpayers.

The first step for Reid and McConnell may be to find a formula acceptable to their own parties in the Senate.

While members of the Senate, more than members of the House of Representatives, have expressed flexibility on taxes, it's far from a sure thing in a body that ordinarily requires not just a majority of the 100-member Senate to pass a bill, but a super-majority of 60 members.

With 51 Democrats, two independents who vote with the Democrats and 47 Republicans, McConnell and Reid may have to agree to suspend the 60-vote rule.

Getting a bill through the Republican-controlled House may be much tougher. The conservative wing of the House, composed of many lawmakers aligned with the Tea Party movement who fear being targeted by anti-tax activists in primary elections in 2014, has shown it will not vote for a bill that raises taxes on anyone, even if it means defying Republican House Speaker John Boehner.

Many Democrats are wedded to the opposite view - and have vowed not to support continuing the Bush-era tax rates for people earning more than $250,000 a year.

Some senators are wary of the procedural conditions House Republicans are demanding. Boehner is insisting the Senate start its work with a bill already passed by the House months ago that would continue all Bush-era tax cuts for another year. The Democratic-controlled Senate may amend the Republican bill, he says, but it must be the House bill.

For Boehner, it's the regular order when considering revenue measures, which the U.S. Constitution says must originate in the House.

SHIFT BLAME

As some Democrats see it, it's a way to shift blame if the enterprise goes down in flames. House Republicans would be able to claim that since they had already done their part by passing a bill, the Senate should take the blame for plunging the nation off the "cliff."

And that could bring public wrath, currently centered mostly on Republicans, onto the heads of Democrats.

Voters may indeed be looking for someone to blame if they see their paychecks shrink as taxes rise or their retirement savings dwindle as a result of a plunge in global markets.

If Reid and McConnell succeed, there could be political ramifications for each side. For example, a deal containing any income tax hikes could complicate McConnell's own 2014 re-election effort in which small-government, anti-tax Tea Party activists are threatening to mount a challenge.

If Obama and his fellow Democrats are perceived as giving in too much, it could embolden Republicans to mount challenge after challenge, possibly handcuffing the president before his second term even gets off the ground.

It could be a sprint to the finish. One Democratic aide expected "negotiation for a day." If the aide is correct, the world would know by late on Saturday or early on Sunday if Washington's political dysfunction is about to reach a new, possibly devastating, low.

If Reid and McConnell reach a deal, it would then be up to the full Senate and House to vote, possibly as early as Sunday.

Reid and McConnell have been through bitter fights before. The deficit reduction and debt limit deal that finally was secured last year was a brawl that ended only when the two leaders agreed to a complicated plan that secured about $1 trillion in savings, but really postponed until later a more meaningful plan to restore the country's fiscal health.

That effort led to the automatic spending cuts that form part of the "fiscal cliff."

Just months later, in December 2011, Reid and McConnell were going through a tough fight over extending a payroll tax cut.

In both instances, it was resistance from conservative House Republicans that complicated efforts, just as is the case now with the "fiscal cliff."

Alistair Overeem pokes fun at Junior dos Santos during UFC 155

Before Junior Dos Santos' bout with Cain Velasquez was over, another opponent was poking fun of the former champ. Alistair Overeem was scheduled to fight dos Santos in May, but was suspended by the Nevada Athletic Commission because of high testosterone levels before the fight.

Overeem tweeted:

Ouch! Though Overeem has a beef with dos Santos, he has to get through Antonio Silva on Feb. 2 first. Overeem applied for a license this week. He will have to appear before a hearing on Jan. 8 before he is approved.

If dos Santos and Overeem do end up fighting, it won't be for the title. Velasquez beat dos Santos in a one-sided, five-round decision on Saturday night at UFC 155.

Egypt transfers tons of building materials to Gaza

EL-ARISH, Egypt (AP) ? An Egyptian security official says that thousands of tons of building materials such as cement and steel are crossing into the Palestinian Gaza Strip, which had previously been under a strict blockade.

He said the move was made in consultation with Israeli officials, who were in Cairo Thursday to discuss security in the Sinai Peninsula and the Egyptian-brokered ceasefire signed by Gaza's Hamas rulers and Israel last month.

The Egyptian official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media.

The director of Gaza's border authority, Maher Abu Sabha, confirmed to The Associated Press that 20 trucks of material are expected to enter the coastal strip on Saturday through the Rafah crossing. Qatar is paying for the raw materials, which were bought in Egypt.

Ford Fusion Energi plug-in hybrid sedan EPA-rated at 108 MPGe city, 92 MPGe highway and 100 MPGe combined; Ford projects best hybrid sales quarter ever

Ford Fusion Energi plug-in hybrid sedan EPA-rated at 108 MPGe city, 92 MPGe highway and 100 MPGe combined; Ford projects best hybrid sales quarter ever

The US Environmental Protection Agency has rated the new Fusion Energi plug-in hybrid (earlier post) at up to 108 MPGe city, 92 MPGe highway and 100 MPGe combined (2.2, 2.6 and 2.4 l/100km-equivalent, respectively).

Fusion Energi is the Ford brand?s fifth electrified vehicle to launch in the past year?and its second plug-in hybrid after the C-MAX Energi. Ford expects the Fusion Energi to accelerate its record hybrid sales pace, including its highest monthly hybrid sales month ever in November. Ford projects 19,000-plus hybrid/electric vehicle sales in the fourth quarter of this year, making it the company?s best quarter for hybrids ever and besting its own previous hybrid vehicle sales record by more than 50%; Ford expects more than half of hybrid sales this year to come in this quarter.

With Fusion Energi and Fusion Hybrid, the Fusion lineup brings the widest range of powertrain options to the US midsize segment. Fusion also is available in gasoline-fueled versions with a choice between a pair of fuel-efficient EcoBoost engines and a normally aspirated four-cylinder engine.

Like its cousin, the C-MAX Energi PHEV, the Fusion PHEV offers:

  • SmartGauge with EcoGuide to provide in-vehicle customizable displays, including instantaneous fuel economy readings and coaching functions to help drivers understand and optimize their fuel efficiency.

  • SYNC with MyFord Touch to manage and control phone, available navigation, entertainment and climate functions. Plug-in hybrids and all-electric models have additional options for monitoring information like battery state of charge.

  • EV+ combining the built-in GPS of Ford SYNC with proprietary software algorithms developed by Ford engineers to learn frequent destinations. As a result, vehicles give drivers more drive time in electric-only mode.

C-MAX became the fastest-selling hybrid ever at launch after 8,030 units were sold in October and November, the first two months C-MAX was on the market. The pace beat Toyota Camry Hybrid?s 7,300 sales in its first two full months of availability in May and June 2006.

The response to C-MAX really shows the amount of pent-up demand from a specific market for C-segment hybrids. Fusion Energi has a different audience in the midsize sedan market, but delivers many of the characteristics and technologies that make C-MAX Energi so great, which is why we?re anticipating a similar positive response.

?C.J. O?Donnell, marketing manager, Ford Electrified Vehicles

Ford differentiates between the two PHEVs by noting that C-MAX is geared toward those most concerned with fuel economy, but designed so that owners aren?t forced to sacrifice comfort and convenience. Fusion is designed with the driver?s sense of style in mind, delivering a midsize sedan that offers functional design elements that enhance its sleek exterior and promote fuel economy.

Many of the technologies of Fusion Energi are shared across Ford?s electrified vehicle lineup and draw from the automaker?s portfolio of about 500 patents related specifically to hybrid technology:

  • MyFord Mobile: Enables access via smartphone or Web-based interface to perform key tasks, such as monitoring a vehicle?s state of charge and current range or locating charge stations and planning routes to find them.

  • Eco cruise: Saves vehicle energy by relaxing acceleration compared to standard cruise control.

  • EV mode button: Conveniently mounted on the console to the right of the shifter?allows a driver to switch vehicle operation between three modes: all-electric, normal hybrid operation and conserve battery power for later use.

  • Regenerative braking is capable of capturing and reusing more than 90% of the braking energy normally lost during the braking process.

  • Hybrid transmission, designed by Ford engineers in-house, is capable of operating at high speeds and in a smooth, fuel-efficient manner at the same time. (Earlier post.)

  • Advanced lithium-ion batteries covered by an eight-year/100,000-mile component limited warranty.

  • Charge port with LED light ring, conveniently located on the driver?s side and near the front of the car, it features a light ring that illuminates to indicate charge status.

Crush Fresh Food Caf? and Juice Bar - CapeTownMagazine.com

An inner city oasis of healthy, delicious food and drink

?Let food be your medicine and medicine be your food? ? the quote is the first thing that catches my eye as I settle into one of Crush?s many window seats, a perfect perch from where I can watch the goings-on of Cape Town?s bustling pedestrian walkway, St Georges Mall. ?The saying is written in bright letters on the chalkboard menu and supports the restaurant?s philosophy: ?handmade food with the finest and freshest ingredients?.

??I?ve always been passionate about nutrition and healthy eating,? says owner Shonah Gallichan. Petite in stature and like a physiological testament to her statement, she has eyes that sparkle with vitality. Shonah took over the business in 2002, and transformed it from a simple juice bar to a healthy food caf? that caters to all kinds of diet preferences and food intolerances. She says Crush deals in, ?the feel good energy of living cuisine.?

The small restaurant is unpretentious and welcoming. It?s decorated with a personal touch, from the Skinny laMinx cushions to colourful chalkboards that cover the back wall. It?s a look that?s meant to make you feel right at home, and that?s the sentiment the food delivers too. ?We craft our food with the love and care your mother would; it?s made from scratch with raw ingredients we buy from ethical producers.?

Let?s eat!

What?s more, the food menu has been designed to highlight certain health benefits, and dishes receive symbols next to their descriptions: from a ?GF? for gluten free to an ?OM? for omega rich.?

Catering to vegans, vegetarians and even meat-eaters (so you don?t have to compromise when out on a date), there?s a range of light meals to choose from. For lunch, tuck into wraps, salads and sandwiches; not to mention, there are always daily specials which generally provide a heartier alternative, from ostrich bobotie to vegetarian lasagne with lemon ricotta.

?We?re famous for our soups (think sweet potato soup with roasted cashews or a spicy roast corn chowder),? says Shonah. She continues to tell me that the inventive broths are so popular that the restaurant has a mailing list to let people know about the weekly flavours. Plus, gluten free bread is baked every morning.?

Hot sips and cold drinks

The coffee is a delight; my cappuccino is perfectly rich and foamy, and as a bonus, it?s made with organic fair trade beans. Plus, for the vegans, health conscious and lactose intolerant, soy and rice milk are available as dairy substitutes.

There?s also fragrant chai on the hot sips menu as well as herbal teas and a Giluc, the latter which Shonah is sipping while we chat. The drink is a brew of mint, ginger, honey, lemon and cinnamon?the perfect elixir for a sore throat or low spirits. ?

On a similar note, the bustling bistro is renowned for its health-packed smoothies and juices. Loaded with nutrients, the colourful concoctions are as delicious as they are good for you. For a summery sip try the Tropical Twister with pineapple, banana, apple, ginger and coconut milk, or if you?re in the mood for more of a ?super sip? try one of the Superfood Smoothies, which come with antioxidant powerhouses such as goji berries and cacao. Interestingly, there?s also a hemp seed smoothie blended with cacao nibs and almond milk called Choco Hemp Protein Booster.?

Shonah brings me one to try. It?s a creamy and moreish drink, made all the more delicious with the knowledge that it?s good for me too. There is also an option to ?boost your health? with additions of powdered nutrients. There?s acai, which is a rich fruit from the depths of the South American jungles that?s good for everything from anti-ageing to helping to prevent diseases. You can also add a shot of pure wheatgrass to any drink; the bright green liquid detoxifies, and invigorates. And lastly, spirulina, like the hemps seeds, is a complete food and is an extra that offers a full house of nutrients.

The range of freshly squeezed juices changes with the seasons to not only suit the produce but the weather too. Try the Pear and Ginger Cleanser for an unusual and refreshing juice or the beetroot driven Red Red Wine; there are also specials: in summer, you might find a Watermelon Mint Chiller, or in the depths of winter, a Citrus Blast.

Even the naughty drinks subscribe to the caf??s artisanal philosophy, from organic wines to microbrews.

From breakfast to fast food

Crush is open daily at 7am, and the breakfast menu is as varied as the lunch offering. Diners can choose from traditional morning favourites to a more inspired first meal of the day. All the dishes are healthy yet somehow indulgent; for example, how about gluten free blueberry pancakes drizzled with honey? Or an organic farm cheese and bacon omelette?

?Cape Town doesn?t really cater for healthy food,? says Shonah. ?Especially healthy fast food. Everything on the menu is offered as takeaway, and we deliver before noon and after 2pm.?

The future for Crush? ?To develop vegan and raw food-inspired products, from vegan ice creams made from cashew nuts to plant-based food such as raw pizza.

Here at Crush I?ve discovered you don?t have to sacrifice flavour for health, and as Shonah says, ?If you eat well, you live well.?

Tip: With advanced warning Crush can create a snack platter for business meetings or private social affairs.

Bill: Very reasonable for a health food restaurant, a culinary genre in which high prices are usually the norm.

Above The Limit to sweep through the Stadium Bookmakers Maiden Sprint Trophy

The Grade OR Stadium Bookmakers Maiden Sprint Trophy has only been able to line-up some really moderate performers for the 305 metres flat challenge. The race will be hosted by Nottingham on Monday, 17th December and the prize money set for it is ?150.

Gathering tonight are, Above The Limit, Marlfield Luke, Salacres Brad, Joes Inheritance, Liverpool Lass and Droopys Nollaig. Majority of the line-up is not accustomed to race at the level that awaits them tonight.

The only reasonable entry among the lot is the two-year-old black dog, Above The Limit. He has not achieved anything extra ordinary, but was able to qualify as the runner-up in the very recent attempt at the open level.

He has been allotted the first trap and is supported by 10 to 3 odds.

The first time the R. Thompson trained took part in an open race was on 29th June, 2012 in williamhill.com Festival Fyler Trial Stakes at Sunderland over 261 metres.

Taking off in the red of the first trap, he missed racing right away to the wire by 3 ? lengths. The race was won by, Drumna Bell, in 15.93 seconds.

His performance in the open races at Nottingham was not impressive at all, he ended fourth and then was further dragged down to the fifth position in the very next outing.

Hondo Black?s two-year-old son then switched to the Grade A races, and kept failing in the open challenges that kept coming in between.

On 23rd October, he ended fifth in the Sheffield Stadium Maiden Sprint ? Duplicated at Sheffield over 280 metres. The breaking from the fourth trap led to constant crowding from which he could not break in time. The race was won by, Solid Segal, in 16.57 seconds.

His most recent open outing was in the First Choice Security Standard on 30th November, 2012 at Pelaw Grange. He missed the trip to the winner?s enclosure only by a head?s mark while the race was concluded by, Lindisfarne, in 26.12 seconds.

The two-year-old will take off in the red of the first trap tonight, the break is not unfamiliar, but he needs to win this time.

The Geminids' peak was supposed to be good this year, as it occurred in a sky left dark by the new moon. Experts had predicted that viewers in rural areas might see 100 meteors per hour early Friday morning (Dec. 14) ? and perhaps even more.

Judging by the reactions of some SPACE.com readers, the Geminids did not disappoint.

"What an incredible show we had here!" Sean Parker, who watched the shower early Friday just west of Tucson, Ariz., told SPACE.com via email. "I was able to see about 50 per hour." [Photos: Geminid Meteors of 2012]

Parker constructed a gorgeous composite image of about 30 frames, which captured dozens of shooting stars streaking through the skies above a saguaro-studded desert mountain.

"This image took a lot of work, as I had to scroll through about 400 frames and find which frames had shooting stars in them, then cut out every meteor and blend," Parker said.

Skywatchers on the other side of the world were enthralled by the Geminids as well.

"Awesome experience," said Mumbai, India-based Swaroop Hangal, who also captured a photo of a fast-moving meteor.

"Today, I had planned to see 50 streaks and then quit with or without a pic," Hangal said. "Had almost lost hope when I could capture the 50th one, just between Betelgeuse at the bottom & Alhena in the Gemini constellation."

The Geminids? so named because they appear to emanate from the constellation Gemini (The Twins) ? are one of the most dependably impressive annual meteor showers.

They result when Earth plows through debris shed by a 3-mile-wide (5 kilometers) asteroid called 3200 Phaethon. These tiny particles burn up in our planet's atmosphere, leaving bright streaks in the sky to commemorate their passing.

The Geminids' source is unusual for?meteor showers, which are typically caused by streams of sloughed-off comet particles. Debris streams from the famous Halley's Comet, for example, produce the Orionids every October and the Eta Aquarids, which peak in early May.

If you missed the Geminid peak last night, don't fret; you still have a few days to catch the shower this year. The Geminids should linger until Sunday (Dec. 16) or so before fizzling out completely.

Editor's Note: If you take a photo of this year's Geminids that you'd like to share with SPACE.com for a possible story or gallery, please send it, along with your comments, to spacephotos@space.com.

December is the best month to buy a car

16 hrs.

Unless you?re the sort of person who finishes up their holiday shopping even before the first Black Friday ads show up on television, you?re likely racing around trying to figure out what to get for your loved ones.? Maybe for yourself.?

Perhaps a new car is on somebody?s wish list but you?re wondering whether it makes sense to buy one this time of year.? Well, if you can swing the down payment it just might be.? Historical data ? and recent comments by industry executives ? suggest that December is traditionally a good time to buy and this year may yield some especially attractive deals.

?This will be the highest discount period,? contends Jesse Toprak, chief auto analyst for the data tracking firm TrueCar.com.?

The Detroit Bureau:?2014 Chevrolet Corvette breaks cover?

Spring is generally the strongest selling season of the year, buyers often deciding to trade in after watching the old jalopy cough and sputter through the cold.? Autumn brings the traditional start of the new model-year, many buyers racing to showrooms to get the newest and hottest products.

There are, however, a number of reasons why December is a great month for those who can swing a deal on top of the rest of their Christmas and Chanukah shopping.? For one thing, most shoppers are focused on other matters, whether a necktie for dad, some perfume for mom, or toys for the tots.? Showrooms can be downright lonely places this time of year but dealers still have their own bills to meet ? and gifts to buy ? so they?re often in a mood to do what it takes to get you to buy.?

The Detroit Bureau: Nissan opens U.S. Leaf battery plant?

This past year has been a good one for the auto industry. ?The U.S. is one of the few places where the industry is making money,? notes Steve Cannon, the CEO of Mercedes-Benz U.S. After years of recession, the industry sharply cut back production capacity and with demand rebounding faster than expected there?s been less pressure to offer incentives than has historically been the case following a deep recession.

Overall, rebates and other givebacks have been falling in recent months, though that can vary, model-by-model.

Like your local dealer, manufacturers have bills to pay and factories to keep running, so they?re often in a mood to make potential buyers happy when demand might otherwise be low.?

Watch TV and you?ll be barraged with ads for the various holiday specials.? Regional marketing managers just might be hoping to meet their quotas.? Brands might be locked into a race to see who can declare the biggest sales or market share.?

The Detroit Bureau: BMW teases new M6 Gran Coupe?

You?ll find some particularly sweet deals on pickup trucks right now, General Motors President Mark Reuss admitting the maker ?missed? market trends in November and wound up with a surfeit of unsold Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups that it wants to clear out before the New Year.

And it?s not alone.? In some cases, an automaker will advertise more aggressive incentives and there are plenty ways to check those out online.? In other instances, however, a company like GM or Toyota will set quotas and encourage dealers to meet them by dangling an extra $500 or $1,000 per vehicle.? The dealer can pocket that money or use a little to sweeten and close more deals.

Some data indicate the best days to buy are December 10, 24, 27, 28, 29, 30 and 31st, at least according to TrueCar?s analysis of past trends ? seven of the 10 best days of the year, it says, measured in terms of the money you?ll save compared to list price.

But smart shoppers can improve their odds just about any day in December.? There are numerous websites, such as TrueCar and KellyBlueBook, that provide pricing information. Don?t be surprised if seemingly fixed numbers, even MSRP, or the Manufacturer?s Suggested Retail Price, don?t always agree.? And take so-called ?invoice? prices with the proverbial grain of salt. What the deal actually pays is usually a fair bit less, says TrueCar CEO Scott Painter, because of so-called ?holdbacks? and other discounts.

You?re likely to get your best deals on discontinued and leftover models, as well as vehicles such as those GM pickups that haven?t been selling as well as expected and are in over-supply.

Some experts have suggested buyers get their best deals when they?re grumpy, perhaps because sales people think the customer is more likely to walk if they don?t come up with a good deal.? It certainly helps not to be overly enthusiastic and signal you?re ready to buy no matter what.

TrueCar?s Painter also stresses that while you always want to get a good price, demanding the rock-bottom number isn?t always the best deal in the long-run.? A smart shopper may be willing to pay a bit more for a dealer they can trust, one that has a good reputation, the right hours, perhaps a loaner program for when your car is in the shop.

But do your homework and December just might land the car of your dreams under the tree.

Pets May Console After Sandy Hook School Shooting | Steve Dale's ...

By Steve Dale, Saturday at 4:45 pm

Pets May Console After Sandy Hook School Shooting

Families who lost children at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CN are undoubtedly going through emotional upheaval beyond imagination. Incomprensible. Of all the possible horrors ? there likely is nothing so awful as losing a child, particularly so unexpectedly. Still, having a pet at home might help to comfort grieving families, particularly children.

Any family in the community with a dog may benefit. It doesn?t mean those families won?t grieve, obviously they will.

But we know that dogs (and cats too) do help. They somehow know how to and when to console. There don?t require an ability to speak in order to help, or at least help some ? yet somehow they know when we need help.

After 9/11 ?comfort dogs? were brought in. These dogs (which unfortunately weren?t all true trained therapy dogs ? better if they had been), were instantly sought out by families missing loved ones, and also by emergency responders ? who also sought reassuring. These dogs really did help.

On the flip side, we will likely learn there were various warning signs that the gunman Adam Lanza was a very troubled individual. Experts suggest there usually are. One red flag among most mass murderers is the irrefutable ?Link? between animal abuse, and then ultimately violence inflicted on people. In other words, most people who commit mass murder previously ?practice? one way or another on animals.

Google Fixes Fake Mobile Ad Clicks - Business Insider

If you've ever fat-fingered an ad on a smartphone or tablet, the thought must have occurred to you: Do people ever click on these ads on purpose?

Google, a major seller of mobile ads, has tacitly admitted that the answer is no, in a blog post unveiling a new format for mobile ads meant to stop accidental clicks.

"We find that most accidental clicks on in-app image ads happen at the outer edge of the ad unit, likely when you?re trying to click or scroll to nearby content," product manager Allen Huang wrote in a blog post Thursday. "Now if you click on the outer border of the ad, we?ll prompt you to verify that you actually meant to click on the ad to learn more."

Accidental clicks are a far bigger problem on mobile than on desktop websites. A recent study by Trademob found that 22 percent of mobile-ad clicks are accidental. (To our ears, that sounds really low.)

Google expects the change to lower click-through rates but increase conversion rates from legitimate clicks.

This is a good step. But it brings up a larger point: Why is Google trying to rejigger banner ads for the mobile Web, when the industry consensus is that "native" ads?ads that fit seamlessly into the content and services where they're found?are the way to go.

Some examples of native advertising formats are Twitter's Promoted Tweets, Facebook's Sponsored Stories, and Foursquare's Promoted Updates. Smaller startups are also coming up with clever solutions: Kiip, for example, gives mobile users rewards that appear after you log a workout with a fitness app or finish a level in a game.

Google, in a sense, pioneered native advertising when it came up with the text links it inserts into search-engine results. Rather than show banner ads, Google search delivers related ads tied to keywords in the search query.

YouTube's skippable video ads are in some sense native?you're already watching a video, so why not watch a video ad, too?

But Google hasn't found a good native solution for mobile advertising in its portfolio of products. Until it does, it's going to keep tinkering around the edges and trying to optimize mobile display ads.

This seems like exactly the problem Google CEO Larry Page talked about recently, in trying to get his company to innovate:

In general I think there's a tendency for people to think about the things that exist. Our job is to think of the thing you haven't thought of yet that you really need.

Sure, it's great to stop mistaken clicks which annoy both users and advertisers. But the reason this problem exists in the first place is because Google hasn't brought enough innovation to mobile advertising.

Light used to remotely trigger biochemical reactions

Friday, December 14, 2012

Since Edison's first bulb, heat has been a mostly undesirable byproduct of light. Now researchers at Rice University are turning light into heat at the point of need, on the nanoscale, to trigger biochemical reactions remotely on demand.

The method created by the Rice labs of Michael Wong, Ramon Gonzalez and Naomi Halas and reported today in the American Chemical Society journal ACS Nano makes use of materials derived from unique microbes ? thermophiles ? that thrive at high temperatures but shut down at room temperature.

The Rice project led by postdoctoral fellow Matthew Blankschien and graduate student Lori Pretzer combines enzymes from these creatures with plasmonic gold nanoparticles that heat up when exposed to near-infrared light. That activates the enzymes, which are then able to carry out their functions.

This effectively allows chemical processes to happen at lower temperatures. Because heating occurs only where needed ? at the surface of the nanoparticle, where it activates the enzyme ? the environment stays cooler.

Blankschien thinks that's fascinating.

"Basically, we're getting the benefits of high-temperature manufacturing without needing a high-temperature environment," said Blankschien, who won the Peter and Ruth Nicholas Postdoctoral Fellowship two years ago to work on these ideas. "The challenge was to keep the higher temperature at the nanoparticle, where the enzyme is activated, from affecting the environment around it."

The technique holds great potential for industrial processes that now require heat or benefit from remote triggering with light.

"The implications are pretty exciting," said Wong, a professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering and of chemistry. "In the chemical industry, there's always a need for better catalytic materials so they can run reactions more inexpensively, more 'green' and more sustainably. You shouldn't run through gallons of solvent to make a milligram of product, even if you happen to be able to sell it for a lot of money."

For industry, the potential energy savings alone may make the Rice process worth investigating. "Here we're using 'free' energy," Wong said. "Instead of needing a big boiler to produce steam, you turn on an energy-efficient light bulb, like an LED. Or open a window."

The particle at the center of the process is a gold nanorod about 10 nanometers wide and 30 long that heats up when hit with near-infrared light from a laser. The rods are just the right size and shape to react to light at around 800 nanometers. The light excites surface plasmons that ripple like water in a pool, in this case emitting energy as heat.

Halas' Rice lab is famous for pioneering the use of gold nanoshells (a related material) to treat cancer by targeting tumors with particles that are bulk heated to kill tumors from the inside. The therapy is now in human trials.

The new research takes a somewhat different tack by heating nanoparticles draped with a model thermophilic enzyme, glucokinase, from Aeropyrum pernix. A. pernix is a microbe discovered in 1996 thriving near hot underwater vents off the coast of Japan. At around 176 degrees Fahrenheit, A. pernix degrades glucose, a process necessary to nearly every living thing. The enzyme can be heated and cooled repeatedly.

In their experiments, Blankschien and Pretzer cloned, purified and altered glucokinase enzymes so they would attach to the gold nanoparticles. The enzyme/nanoparticle complexes were then suspended in a solution and tested for glucose degradation. When the solution was heated in bulk, they found the complexes became highly active at 176 degrees, as expected.

Then the complexes were encapsulated in a gel-like bead of calcium alginate, which helps keeps the heat in but is porous enough to allow enzymes to react with materials around it. Under bulk heating, the enzymes' performance dropped dramatically because the beads insulated the enzymes too well.

But when encapsulated complexes were illuminated by continuous, near-infrared laser light, they worked substantially better than under bulk heating while leaving the solution at near-room temperature. The researchers found the complexes robust enough for weeks of reuse.

"As far-fetched as it sounds, I think chemical companies will be interested in the idea of using light to make chemicals," Wong said. "They're always interested in new technologies that can help make chemical products more cheaply."

He sees other possible uses for the new approach in the production of fuels from degradation of biomass like lignocellulose; for drug manufacture on demand ? maybe from nanoparticle-infused tattoos on the body; or even for lowering blood sugar concentrations as a different way to manage diabetes.

"That we can now make these particles is great," Wong said. "The next exciting part is in thinking about how we can deploy them."

Ryan Huschka, a co-author of the paper, is a former Rice graduate student and now an assistant professor of chemistry at Newman University. Halas is the Stanley C. Moore Professor in Electrical and Computer Engineering, a professor of biomedical engineering, chemistry, physics and astronomy and director of Rice's Laboratory for Nanophotonics. Gonzales is an associate professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering and also of bioengineering

The research was supported by the Peter and Ruth Nicholas Postdoctoral Fellowship Program administered by the Richard E. Smalley Institute for Nanoscale Science and Technology, the Rice University Institute of Biosciences and Bioengineering Hamill Innovations Award Program, the Rice University Faculty Initiatives Fund, the Robert A. Welch Foundation, the National Security Science and Engineering Faculty Fellowship, the Defense Threat Reduction Agency, the Air Force Office of Scientific Research and the National Science Foundation.

Robbie Parker Recalls 6-Year Old Daughter, Newtown Shooting Victim (PHOTOS)

NEWTOWN, Conn. -- Fighting back tears and struggling to catch his breath, the father of a 6-year-old gunned down in the school shooting in Connecticut told the world Saturday about a little girl who loved to draw and was always smiling, and he also reserved surprising words of sympathy for the gunman.

Robbie Parker's daughter Emilie was among the 20 children who died Friday in the one of the worst attacks on schoolchildren in U.S. history. He was one of the first parents to speak publicly about their loss.

"She was beautiful. She was blond. She was always smiling," he said.

Parker spoke to reporters not long after police released the names and ages of the victims, a simple document that told a horrifying story of loss.

He expressed no animosity, said he was not mad and offered sympathy for family of the man who killed 26 people and himself.

To the man's family, he said, "I can't imagine how hard this experience must be for you."

He said he struggled to explain the death to Emilie's two siblings, 3 and 4.

"They seem to get the fact that they have somebody they're going to miss very much," he said.

Parker said his daughter loved to try new things ? except for new food. And she was quick to cheer up those in need.

"She never missed an opportunity to draw a picture or make a card for those she around her," he said.

The world is a better place because Emilie was in it, he said.

"I'm so blessed to be her dad," he said.

Top Canada court upholds anti-terrorism law in unanimous ruling

OTTAWA (Reuters) - Canada's Supreme Court on Friday upheld an anti-terrorism law enacted after the September 11, 2001, attacks on the United States, ruling unanimously that those who choose to engage in terrorism must "pay a very heavy price."

The law's constitutionality was challenged by Mohammad Momin Khawaja, convicted in Canada of terrorism for involvement with a British group that had plotted unsuccessfully to set off bombs in London.

It was also challenged by two men accused of terrorism by the United States for trying to buy missiles or weapons technology for the Sri Lankan Tamil Tigers.

The court rejected arguments that the law's definition of terrorism was overly broad. It upheld Khawaja's life sentence and confirmed the orders to extradite the other two to the United States.

Khawaja, a Canadian of Pakistani descent, was the first to be convicted under the law. He was sentenced in 2008 to 10-1/2 years in prison, and his sentence was then extended to life after appeal by the government.

The trial judge noted that Khawaja referred to Osama Bin Laden as "the most beloved person to me in the ... whole world, after Allah." He was found to have participated in a terrorism training camp in Pakistan and to have designed a device dubbed the "hi fi digimonster" for detonating bombs.

"The appellant was a willing participant in a terrorist group," Supreme Court Chief Justice Beverley McLachlin wrote in the 7-0 decision, adding that he was "apparently remorseless."

"He was committed to bringing death on all those opposed to his extremist ideology and took many steps to provide support to the group. The bomb detonators he attempted to build would have killed many civilians had his plans succeeded."

The law applies to any act committed for a political, religious or ideological purpose with the intention of intimidating the public by causing death or serious bodily harm, or substantial property damage, or causing serious interference with an essential service.

The court also ruled that Canada can proceed to extradite two men the United States has accused of involvement with the Tamil Tigers, which waged a bloody war for independence in Sri Lanka and is considered a terrorist organization by Washington and Ottawa.

The Canadian government declined to comment on when they would be extradited.

Piratheepan Nadarajah was alleged to have tried to purchase surface-to-air missiles and AK-47 assault rifles for the Tamil Tigers from an undercover officer posing as a black-market arms dealer on Long Island, New York.

The other man, Suresh Sriskandarajah, was alleged to have helped Tamil Tigers get electronic equipment, submarine and warship design software and communications equipment.

They surrendered to the government ahead of the court decision, their lawyers said.

BEYOND 'LEGITIMATE EXPRESSION'

The court disagreed that the federal law's terrorism provisions had put a chilling effect on Canadians' freedom of expression and was disproportionately broad.

"Only individuals who go well beyond the legitimate expression of a political, religious or ideological thought, belief or opinion, and instead engage in one of the serious forms of violence - or threaten one of the serious forms of violence - listed (in the law) need fear liability under the terrorism provisions of the Criminal Code," McLachlin wrote.

She quoted with approval the appeals court decision in the Khawaja case that faulted the Ottawa trial judge's sentence for failing to send a "clear and unmistakable message that terrorism is reprehensible and those who choose to engage in it will pay a very heavy price."

The original sentence of 10-1/2 years does "not approach an adequate sentence for such acts," she concluded.

Khawaja's lawyer, Lawrence Greenspon, said it was a "terrible day" for his client and said too often people were investigated or prosecuted for their religious or political beliefs.

"It's a ... very unfortunate ruling for minorities in this country, and we're extremely disappointed with the result," he told reporters in the foyer of the Supreme Court.

Justice Minister Rob Nicholson said the decision was important as Canada was not immune to the threat of terrorism. "The court sent a strong message that terrorism will not be treated leniently in Canada," he said.

The cases are Mohammad Momin Khawaja v. Her Majesty the Queen. (Ont) (34103); Suresh Sriskandarajah v. United States of America, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada (34009), Piratheepan Nadarajah v. United States of America, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada (34013).
