Ancient Buddhist grottoes along the Silk Road in western China are magnificent art that show the influence of many cultures over more than 1,500 years.
Shanxi, China --? Walking along spectacular Lifo Avenue, with its 26 marble ornamental pillars, I marvelled at the grand renovations undertaken at the Yungang Grottoes site. Compared with last time I visited nearly a decade ago, the zone has expanded to almost eight times the previous size, adding ancient-style pavilions and temples, a well-equipped exhibition hall and even a castle-style theater that stretches deep underground.
<< The seated Buddha in Cave No. 20 is the signature of the Yungang Grottoes.(Photo/Shanghai Daily)
Splendid as the renovation is, I quickly headed toward the grotto complexes. It is only when you see the grottoes stretching before your eyes that you can understand the beauty of Yungang Buddhist art.
In the south cliffs of Wuzhou Mountain west to Datong City, Shanxi Province's second largest city, the grottoes were created in the reign of Emperor Wencheng (AD 440-465) in Northern Wei Dynasty.
They were an attempt at atonement after the emperor's grandfather, Emperor Taiwu, attempted to extirpate Buddhism in AD 445, during a struggle with the Han insurgents. In the turmoil, numerous temples and Buddhist sutras were burned, statues toppled and monks killed.
Monk Tanyao is one of the lucky few who managed to escape. Later when Buddhism was revived, he convinced Wencheng to construct the grottoes.Today, 45 of more than 200 grottoes in Yungang are open to the public. Most were created before the empire relocated the capital from Pingcheng (today's Datong) to Luoyang in Henan Province in AD 494. While the huge deep caves on the east and middle were ordered by royals, smaller ones peppering the west are folk art from before AD 494. Do take a look at these smaller ones if you have time, you will still find many surprises that make you awed by the folk wisdom of ancients.
Yungang Grottoes stand out among the four main grotto complexes in China, not only for kaleidoscopic carvings of Buddha and Jataka (the previous lives of Buddha), flying deities and musicians and monks but also for blending traditional Chinese carving with Indian Gandhara art.
A gateway to the west, it is where Buddhist grotto art starts to show Chinese characteristics, with carvings of Chinese pavilions and shrines.
Depictions of Buddha also vary: from the early period's simple masculinity; to the details and lavish decoration of the middle period; to later slender, attractive statues, reflecting folk images for immortals. That created a template for grotto art in northern China, that prevailed until the Tang Dynasty (AD 618-907).
It's also a good place to study ancient history, art, architecture and even music - it took me quite a while to identify musical instruments from a group sculpture. Some of them no longer exist.
It's quite amazing that Yungang, built into on a sandstone cliff that is easily weathered, remains a good condition, compared with other grottoes.
Small holes in the statues tell of later renovations. The largest was in the Liao Dynasty (907-1125) when multi-storied pavilions were built on the cliff face, covering the entrance to almost every larger cave, protecting the grottoes from the elements. Renovations also saw parts repaired and the eyes of statues decorated with black glaze.
As with other Chinese grottoes, many caves are scarred by looting by explorers who hacked off parts and shipped them to places such as Japan, France and the United States.
Despite this, Yungang Grottoes remains relatively intact, an enticing gem that continues to beguile millions of visitors every year.Know as the "Five Caves by Tanyao," Cave Nos. 16-20 are the earliest group of grottoes built by Monk Tanyao on Wuzhou Mountain. Each main Buddha statue represents one emperor of the Northern Wei Dynasty (AD 386-534), through to the reign of Emperor Wencheng.
The sitting Buddha in Cave No. 20 is the signature for the Yungang Grottoes, frequently found on postcards and other souvenirs.
The front ceiling of the cave collapsed in early times, leaving the Buddha and the two others at its side in the open air. It has become a popular spot for tourists to take photographs. With a height of 13.75 meters, the Buddha, said to resemble the state founder Emperor Daowu, has a typical look used to represent the strong, tough northern nomads: with a full face; a broad forehead; a high nose bridge; deep narrow eyes; large earlobes; and broad shoulders. This style of figure dominates in early period of the Yungang Grottoes. A strong Indian influence can also be found in the clothing and accessories depicted in the statues and relief sculptures. Buddha often wears a robe over one shoulder, a common style in India. And a seated Buddha at the east side of Cave No. 18 wears a crown decorated with sun-and-moon patterns derived from the Persian Sassanid Empire. A vivid group sculpture of Indian monks also shows the exotic influences from the civilization to the west.
Cave No. 19 creatively set three Buddha statues of the past, present and future in three separate chambers, lending solemnity to surroundings. At 16.8 meters high, sitting Buddha Shakyamuni is the second largest statue in Yungang,
The standing Buddha in Cave No. 18 is based on Emperor Taiwu. His robe is decorated with thousands of Buddhas, implying his regret at persecuting Buddhism.
Emperor Wencheng's likeness is found the No. 16 cave. Unlike his predecessors, he wears a robe covering both shoulders, with a long knot dangling in front. That style resembles the Gandhara-style robe with a deep-V neck that is often seen in mid-period grottoes, and helps indicates these statues were made later.
Cave Nos. 9-13
These five caves are collectively called "Wuhua Caves," - five glorious caves - in recognition of their gorgeous colored paint work in later dynasties over the relief sculptures inside and out.
A peaceful cross-legged Buddha statue sits in Cave No. 13. Holding his left hand in front of his body while resting the other on his knee, the Buddha resembles the fifth ruler of the dynasty, Emperor Xianwen. A stone warrior, said to be his son - the later Emperor Xiaowen - stands on his leg and holds his left arm, both as a support and interesting decorative feature.
Cave No. 12 is also known as "the cave of music and dance" as it houses exquisite colored relief sculptures of flying dancers and musicians. In the top of its north wall are carved 14 flying musicians in striking poses, each playing a traditional Chinese music instrument. These include: the xuan (a round or oval-shaped pottery wind instrument); the guqin (an ancient seven-stringed plucked instrument); the pipa (a vertical plucked stringed instrument); a horizontal bamboo flute; the konghou (an ancient plucked stringed instrument), a waist drum and the paixiao (a vertical bamboo flute).
Some of these instruments are only found in ancient writings.Numerous relief sculptures of such elegant flying musicians and dancers cover the walls and on the vaults over the windows where sunshine streams in, casting its light over the Buddhas.
Shrine sculpture is another highlight in these five caves, varying in styles and Buddha statues. Shrines come in a number of shapes, including arches, tents or pavilions, while Buddhas sit, stand or cross their legs, a kaleidoscopic depiction of reincarnation.
Cave No. 9 and No. 10 is a double cave; if seen from outside, it has both a front chamber and rear chamber. Double caves in Northern Wei Dynasty can be traced back to Dowager Feng. The widow took charge at an early age of 24, and oversaw an age of suppression.
For 25 years, the empire was held by two "saint" rulers. Therefore, double caves were built to honor these two "saints."On the north wall of the front chamber in Cave No. 10 is a relief sculpture of Sumeru, the mountain that stands in the center of the world, according to ancient Indian mythology. Some 5 meters by 2 meter, carvings include children, deer-like animals, double dragons, the Indian monk Kumarajiva and Deva Asura. On the ceiling of a window over the group sculpture is a blossoming double-petal lotus; as if the shining sun, surrounded by flying deities.
Cave No. 7-8
These two caves form the earliest double cave in Yungang, where cultures from the east and India to the west harmoniously set against and embrace each other.
Inside the arch door to Cave No. 8, on the east wall is a relief sculpture of Indian Shiva Mahesvara. Riding on the sacred ox, the three-headed deity holds the sun, and a bow and arrows in his eight hands. On the opposite side is his son, Kumara, with five heads and six hands riding a peacock. The sculptures illustrate how the Yungang Grottoes borrowed and artistically combined elements from different religions and areas.
On the south wall inside Cave No. 7, over an arch door, is a rectangular curtain-shaped shrine, featuring six plump donors in flowing robes. These six donors were extolled by Liang Sicheng - the "Father of Modern Chinese Architecture" - as "the six beauties in Yungang," for their elegant shapes and enchanting smile.
The double cave also features early period flying deities with bright smooth foreheads, round buns and drifting dresses.Posing in a deep-V, the deities looks cute in an endearingly clumsy way.

Atari's US arm has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection as it looks to split from ailing French parent company Infogrames.
Atari, one of the oldest still-extant names in gaming, has become the latest tech company to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the US.Atari was founded in 1971 by entrepreneurs Nolan Bushnell and Ted Dabney, after they discovered that their original company name - Syzygy Engineering - had already been snaffled. Named for a move in Go, a game beloved by both, Atari would be responsible for the creation of the world's first arcade video game - a port of the Space War mainframe title dubbed Computer Space - but is perhaps best-known for Pong, a straight rip-off of the Tennis game that was proving a hit with buyers of the Magnavox Odyssey at the time. In Atari's defence, Magnavox had stolen the idea for Tennis from a mainframe game dubbed Tennis for Two.
Later, Atari - following some questionable business practices from Bushnell - would enter the home game market with the Video Computer System, later known as the Atari 2600. Acquired by Warner Communications in 1976 - a move that would see Bushnell ousted from the company he founded - the company would a more powerful video gaming systems alongside fully-functional home computers. The well-publicised video games crash of 1983, however, put paid to the company's expansion plans: with the bottom dropping out of the market, Warner Communications saw its stock price drop dramatically and sold the company to Jack Tramiel - founder of Atari rival Commodore, who had been ejected from his own company in a similar manner to Bushnell.
Buying the name as a replacement for the somewhat less catchy Tramiel Technologies, Jack Tramiel would use Atari to launch a series home computers with 32-bit processors - the Atari ST line - as a way to hit back at Commodore. As the home computer market slowed down, Tramiel's Atari would launch a pair of new home consoles and the Atari Lynx hand-held. The Atari Jaguar, claimed to be the world's first 64-bit home console, would launch in 1989 - but sales were poor, the system was difficult to program for and the controller, which featured an entire telephone keypad as well as the more usual buttons, confusing. Numerous lawsuits against Atari would see the company name being sold again - first to hard-drive maker JTS in the form of a merger, and then to Hasbro Interactive which was bought by games developer Infogrames in 2000.
Infogrames would rebrand itself as Atari - because, the likely apocryphal legend would have it, US clients and customers found themselves constantly misreading the French company's name as Infogames - which brings us to the present day: Atari is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Infogrames, with the latter company having purchased all rights to the name from its previously separate US subsidiary Infogrames NA in 2008. That, aside from a brief period that saw Nolan Bushnell return to the 'Atari' board in 2010, is the Atari story in brief - minus Bushnell's intervening founding of the still-successful line of family-friendly pizza parlours Chuck E. Cheese's.
Sadly, the Atari story does not end happily in Infogrames' hands: the company has been posting significant financial losses for the last few years, which have come to head in the form of Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection proceedings. The goal, a company spokesperson has explained to press, is to find the funds required to buy itself out of its ownership by Infogrames and become independent once more. 'With this move, the U.S.-based Atari operations seek to separate from the structural financial encumbrances of their French parent holding company, Atari S.A. (formerly Infogrames S.A.) and secure independent capital for future growth, primarily in the areas of digital and mobile games,' the company's statement reads.
The company is looking to find funding - which will buy investors the iconic Atari 'Mt. Fuji' logo and the rights to classic games including Pong, Asteroids, Missile Command, Tempest as well as more modern intellectual properties - to the tune of $5.25 million, much of which it owes to the BlueBay Asset Management Company.
Under Chapter 11 guidelines, the company will be forced to accept the highest buy-out offer it receives - even if such an offer would see the company broken up and its assets split between multiple buyers - but a team of possible investors led by Jim Wilson, the chief executive of Atari's US arm, is thought to be assembling with the hope of saving the company from the scrapheap yet again.

Jan. 21, 2013 ? Investigators from 15 children's medical centers, including Nationwide Children's Hospital, observed and evaluated critically ill children with influenza to evaluate the relationships between levels of systemic inflammation, immune function and likelihood to die from the illness. The study appears in the January issue of Critical Care Medicine.
The innate immune system is the cellular arm of the immune system that serves as a first-responder to new threats, and is thought to drive the inflammatory response in many forms of critical illness. Recent evidence indicates that suppression of innate immune system function can occur in critically ill patients.
This immune suppression can be quantified in the laboratory through measurement of the capacity of the patient's blood to produce a specific cytokine, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-? , when stimulated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS), a substance which should induce a robust TNF ? response. Patients with innate immune suppression produce reduced amounts of TNF? when their blood is stimulated. In its most severe form, this condition is known as immunoparalysis. Severe reductions in TNF? production capacity have been associated with the development of secondary bacterial infections and death in critically ill adults and children.
Immune function is not routinely measured in patients with influenza, though some therapies used in this population, such as corticosteroids, can be potently immunosuppressive.
"Both pro- and anti-inflammatory therapies have been proposed as additional treatment options for influenza infection," explains lead study author Mark Hall, MD, Critical Care specialist and principal investigator in the Center for Clinical and Translational Research of The Research Institute at Nationwide Children's Hospital. "However, a lack of immune monitoring data in the pediatric population has made therapeutic decision-making difficult in children."
In this first-of-its-kind, multicenter observational study, blood samples from critically ill children with influenza were tested using highly standardized techniques to determine the capacity of the participants' innate immune system to produce TNF? when stimulated with LPS. Healthy control subjects also had their blood tested for the same properties.
Results indicated that despite high levels of circulating pro-inflammatory cytokines, critically ill children with influenza demonstrated lower TNF? production capacity compared with healthy control subjects. Further, children who died from influenza had markedly lower TNF? production capacity compared with survivors. Patients who were co-infected with influenza and the bacteria Staphylococcus aureus showed the greatest degree of immune suppression.
While the reduced capacity to produce TNF? among the critically ill children compared to healthy subjects was expected, the degree of reduction in capacity was severe enough to be highly predictive of death from the illness.
"The study demonstrates a strong relationship between mortality and reduced innate immune responsiveness in critically ill patients," said Dr. Hall, also a faculty member at The Ohio State University College of Medicine. "It also demonstrates the feasibility of large-scale immune monitoring of the kind necessary to develop and test therapies for these critically ill children. The identification of potential treatment thresholds is important because strong evidence suggests that innate immune suppression associated with critical illness may be reversible."
Advocating for additional studies, investigators suggest that patient-specific immune monitoring could aid in determining the most effective treatment for these critically ill patients. Therapies that stimulate the immune system may have a significant role in the treatment of high-risk children with severe immune suppression associated with influenza infection.

There?s two sides to the network marketing coin (and I assure you it is nothing like Harvey Dent?s coin): one is for the IBOs who are enjoying positive results within their MLM business efforts and the other is for those looking into home business network marketing industry as a means of acquiring a second income source. Either way, each side are quite promising and you are thinking about entering into a world of business that is much more interesting and fascinating than considering exactly the same office day in and day out. It?s quite possible that you?ve developed worn out of the malaise surrounding your cubicle and it?s time you had been confronted with some new faces and merchandise by way of a new endeavor in a home-based business according to multi-level marketing.
If you are an IBO, you?re on the side that?s distributing a very popular network marketing product. By your success, you represent whether your franchise is the kind of company into which new prospects would like to try investing their time and expense. You may have a downline, small or big, also it attracts income opportunity seekers who wants to transition from doing work for another person to working for themselves.
Whenever they get to know you through your downline, you?d like them to find out that you?re a reliable business and you and your group are adhering to the highest standards of business integrity and customer satisfaction.
The other side of the coin is where you find yourself if you are searching for a network marketing business opportunity. On this side you?re responsible for making the correct decision by what kind of MLM business you wish to join. You have to be thinking about the product you need to distribute as if you don?t want it, why would anybody else? You also want to make an informed choice. Therefore, the different options are a bit of time looking up the company online and discovering whether or not it?s a high network marketing business or maybe it?s a lesser-known effort. The more popular it is, the greater your chances are to acquire prospects faster than if no one includes a clue what your merchandise is.
What side with the coin are you betting on? Either way, there doesn?t appear to be a losing chance at all.

AUCKLAND (Reuters) - Here are the milestones in the past year for Megaupload founder Kim Dotcom. Dotcom plans to launch on January 20 a new online file storage system, known as Mega.
January 20, 2012 - Seventy armed New Zealand police raid Megaupload founder Kim Dotcom's mansion outside Auckland, acting on a request from the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation.
Dotcom and his colleagues Finn Batato, Mathias Ortmann and Bram van der Kolk are served extradition and search warrants, arrested, and taken into custody. As operators of the website, they are charged with online piracy, fraud and money laundering, and their computers and files are seized. Megaupload is closed down. The raid occurs on the same day U.S. lawmakers axe anti-piracy legislation following heavy public opposition.
February 22 - Dotcom is released on bail, but his movements are restricted and he is prohibited from leaving New Zealand. His bail conditions are eventually relaxed to allow him free movement within the country, while the millionaire is given some access to his frozen funds to pay his legal team and living costs.
June 28 - A New Zealand court rules that search warrants used by local police to raid the Dotcom mansion were illegal, and moves by the FBI to copy data from Dotcom's computers to take offshore were also unlawful. The court's action is seen by many as weakening the extradition case against Megaupload.
August 16 - U.S. efforts to extradite Dotcom are dealt another blow as a New Zealand court rules that prosecutors must show evidence to support charges of internet piracy and copyright breaches. The judge in the case says withholding evidence from Dotcom would give Washington a significant advantage in the extradition hearing. She also rules that the document used to order his extradition was illegal.
September 27 - New Zealand's Prime Minister admits that the country's spy agency illegally carried out surveillance on Dotcom, a resident of the country, despite a law which prohibits monitoring citizens and residents.
October 10 - A U.S. federal judge rules that the U.S. government's criminal case against Megaupload will proceed, while leaving open the option of dismissing the case at a later date on grounds including the possibility that delays in proceedings have denied Megaupload to its right to due process.
January 20, 2013 - Dotcom is due to launch his new cyberlocker, Mega.co.nz, whose encryption system is designed to offer water-tight privacy protection of user files. The launch comes as Dotcom and his colleagues await their extradition hearing, which has been delayed until August.

Ray Nagin, then mayor of New Orleans, in October 2009.
By Kathy Finn, Reuters
NEW ORLEANS - A federal grand jury on Friday charged former New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin with 21 counts of public corruption, including bribery and fraud related to his dealings with city vendors following the 2005 Hurricane Katrina disaster.
Nagin, who served as mayor from 2002-2010, stirred national controversy after the powerful hurricane broke local flood walls and inundated most of the city, killing some 1,500 people and wrecking tens of thousands of homes.
After the flood, Nagin angrily denounced the federal government response, urging government officials to "get off your asses" as thousands of people who had been forced from their homes waited for help.

Police officers shot and killed a suspect and arrested another while serving a warrant in the College area east of San Diego State University Thursday.?
A second suspect ran from the scene and prompted a door-to-door manhunt, a hospital lockdown and a warning the man may be armed with an AK-47. The suspects were wanted parolees at-large.
The second suspect was apprehended shortly after 3 p.m., according to assistant police chief Boyd Long. During his arrest the suspect had dirt and grass across his face and appeared exhausted.
Two people who possibly helped the suspects have barricaded themselves inside an apartment, according to police. Officials have surrounded the apartment containing what they believe to be a man and a woman. It is believed that they are armed and it is still considered a SWAT situation.
Police vehicles and motorcycles have closed Reservoir Drive and Alvarado Road to traffic in both directions.
Officers surrounded a vehicle parked along the 5000-block of Reservoir Drive while they searched for the second of the two suspects. Another person was arrested at the scene, but it is unclear what kind of involvement they had in the situation.
Aerial images from NBC?7 San Diego's helicopter showed officers near what appeared to be a red or maroon car parked with the driver's side door open outside the Villa Del Sol apartments.
Officers served a warrant at the location around 10:30 a.m. Officials say one suspect was shot by San Diego police and transported from the scene by ambulance. The man was later pronounced dead.
Officers scattered themselves throughout the area just south of Interstate 8 and Alvarado Hospital Medical Center. The hospital was placed on lockdown however the emergency room was still open officials said.
Investigators combed nearby canyons and conducted a door-to-door search for the suspect described by police as a heavy-set Hispanic man.
?It?s like they?re kind of waiting for something to happen,? said Will Leingang, who was watching police from his home up the hill from the Villa Del Sol apartments.
He said he didn?t hear any shots, but around 1:30 p.m. he heard a lot of commotion outside.
?Suddenly there was a ton of officers,? he said adding that there appeared to be five or six patrol cars on the road.
Dorian Mcwain, a resident of Villa del Sol, said he heard gunshots very close to his apartment and said he was asked to leave his residence by police.
?To wake up and have this transpire during a normal day is unreal,? he said. ?I?m used to red cups and the college students and the partying, but not gunshots."
A command post was set up in a parking lot near the hospital and San Diego Police Chief William Lansdowne was on scene as his officers prepared for a SWAT?situation.
Thursday was the first day of class for SDSU?students returning from the holiday break.

In?The Happiness Diet: A Nutritional Prescription for a Sharp Brain, Balanced Mood, and Lean, Energized Body?(Rodale Books), Dr. Drew Ramsey, a clinical psychiatrist and Tyler Graham, a health and fitness editor, say the American way of eating has not only turned us into one of the unhealthiest nations in the world, but also one of the unhappiest.
The authors have a nickname for the modern American diet ? ?MAD? ? and they say MAD, with its unhealthy focus on sugars, refined carbs and industrial vegetable fats, is making us fat and depressed.
Human brains depend on certain nutrients for healthy functioning, they say, but these nutrients have been stripped from our food supply by factory farming and modern methods of food processing. The authors say research confirms that people who are most dependent on MAD-style eating habits have increased levels of depression, anxiety, mood swings, hyperactivity and a wide variety of other mental and emotional problems. But it gets worse: Ramsey says MAD ?shrinks our brains, and increases the risks of brain disorders like depression and dementia.? Literally???Yes, literally,? he says, explaining that diabetes and obesity cause key areas of the brain to get smaller over time.
So what?s causing this brain shrinkage? Thanks to MAD, Americans are getting too many calories from sugar and refined carbohydrates (i.e., empty calories); eating the wrong kinds of fats, like too many omega 6 fats (found in cheap vegetable and seed oils like soy, corn, cottonseed, safflower and sunflower oil); and too many trans fats, which are not only linked to heart disease but to depression.
Plus, he adds, we are also ingesting ?a slew of new chemicals like BPA that interrupt neural development, and pesticide residues that very clearly are detectable in people.? Ramsey notes that the main source of exposure to BPA, found in plastic containers and the epoxy resin lining of cans, is your diet.
Now that we know what to avoid, what should we be eating that we?re not? The authors recommend complex carbohydrates like whole grains, nutrient-rich leafy greens, fish, yogurt and, yes, fat. But not just any old fat ? fat from high quality, farm-raised, pesticide-free sources. ?You can do a cheeseburger in a way that?s healthy,? says Ramsey. According to the book,?grass-fed beef and full-fat dairy are not only fine to eat, but?something?you should be eating.
To make the neurotransmitters that everyone?s heard about, like serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine, Ramsey says you need certain nutrients, like vitamin B12, iron and folate. ?Because the brain burns so much energy, releasing free radicals, you need special fat-soluble antioxidants like vitamin E,? he explains, noting the American population is generally deficient in these nutrients, as well as magnesium, a critical element in brain energy.Americans worry too much about calories and obesity, but a calorie isn?t simply a calorie, says Ramsey. While portion control is important, 200 calories of salmon, for example, will give you not only complete protein, but omega 3 fatty acids, vitamin B12, iodine, zinc, and iron ? compared to 200 calories of a bagel with non-fat cream cheese, where you?re going to get sugar, refined carbs and a little bit of protein.
The biggest mistake people make when dieting, Ramsey says, is ? wait for it ? ?They forget to eat food!? He says dieters often begin to count calories and start to eat a variety of packaged, processed foods. ?Anything with an ingredient list, you should be suspicious of,? he says, adding that, dieting or not, people too often rely on supplements, rather than getting their nutrition from the best source ? whole, unprocessed foods.
Inspired? Here are a few holiday brain-food swaps from?Ramsey:
-Swap conventionally raised ham for locally, naturally raised ham or wild-caught salmon.? Conventionally processed ham is injected with sugars, salts and nitrate preservatives; plus, the nutrients from such ham will be different than the fat from a naturally raised pig. Salmon is probably the most economical holiday dinner, he adds, and it?s best for your brain.
-Swap processed or low-fat cheese for a locally raised goat cheese. You?ll get more conjugated linoleic acid (helps fight cancer and belly fat) and some omega 3 fats.
-Swap a box of chocolates for chunks of dark chocolate, which contain more antioxidants and other molecules that promote better blood flow to the brain, paired with dried fruit. Dried fruit is a good way to satisfy your sweet tooth as you also get fiber, minerals and other nutrients, especially in citrus rinds.
-Serve a vegetable frittata (made with whole eggs!) instead of hot-cross buns. ?Eggs are brain food!? says Ramsey, while pastries are the epitome of empty calories ? mainly sugar and refined carbs and not enough brain-essential nutrients.

French special forces began fighting on the ground with Islamist rebels in central Mali on Wednesday, according to regional security sources, six days after the European power launched an air offensive in the country.
?The special forces are currently in Diabaly, engaged in fighting with the Islamists. The Malian army is also on site,? the AFP news agency quoted a Malian security source as saying.
French troops closed in on Islamist-controlled areas earlier on Wednesday, in the first stage of a ground offensive that President Fran?ois Hollande called ?both necessary and legitimate? and Defence Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian warned would be ?long?.
|
A column of around 30 armoured vehicles set out on Tuesday for the town of Diabaly, some 350km to the north of the capital of Bamako.
?Long? war
In an annual address to the French press Wednesday, Hollande said France?s intervention was necessary to stop Islamists, and had the full backing of Europe and the United Nations.
?France will not be alone,? he said, addressing fears that France has been abandoned on the battlefield by Western powers.
Earlier, Le Drian acknowledged to RTL radio that the joint French-Malian offensive to retake the country?s north from jihadist militants had already encountered ?difficult? moments.
?It?s a little more difficult in the west, where we find groups that are the toughest, most fanatical, better organised, more determined and well equipped. There the operation is on its way, but it?s going to be difficult,? he said.
French forces stepped into the Malian conflict last Friday to halt an Islamist advance on Bamako.
On Tuesday, France said that it had 800 soldiers deployed in Mali and would build up to a 2,500-strong force. These will be complemented by a multinational African force of more than 3,000 men, which is due to begin deploying later this week.
Le Drian said they were facing around 1,300 jihadists fighters based in the northern half of the country.
Konna and Diabaly in French sights
In a press conference on Tuesday night, Le Drian said that the town of Konna had not been completely recaptured from jihadists, as the Malian army had previously announced.
The fall of Konna on January 10th prompted the French intervention, which has now entered a sixth day.
Analysts said the first ground battles would likely concentrate around Konna and Diabaly, which fell to an al Qaeda-linked Islamist group on Monday.
Islamists have vowed to strike back at France for its intervention in Mali, saying it would attack the former colonial power on its own soil.
In the main northern Mali town of Gao, the site of intense French air strikes for the past five days, jihadists have reportedly cut telephone lines. The AFP news agency reported that the rebels were concerned residents were sharing information with the French and Malian military.
