Warner Bros. Reportedly Mulling a Casablanca Sequel

casablanca-2-sequel

Before you gather up your baseball bats and pitchforks in search of the person who has conceived of a?Casablanca?sequel, let?s go through all of the details first.? There have been attempts at a sequel to the exceptionally popular and beloved film for over 70 years, and it?s actually astounding that the studios have shown restraint in the matter, opting to wait for what would make for a truly great treatment (of course, why everything has to have a sequel in the first place is another issue).

There were a few ill-fated forays into television that attempted to be prequels or sequels, but neither critics nor audiences were having it at the time.? Naturally, that spooked the studios into caution when it came to potentially continuing the story.? However,?Casablanca?s original screenwriter,?Howard Koch, worked on his own sequel idea in the 1980s, planning to include?Ingrid Bergman?and?Humphrey Bogart?returning as parents.? For more on the planned sequel plot, hit the jump.

casablanca-2-sequelAccording to a great piece from the New York Post (via The Film Stage), the sequel would take place twenty years after the events of the first film, where a child conceived from Rick and Ilsa?s renewed affair (and subsequently adopted by Laszlo) named Richard would travel to the Middle East to learn more about his father.

Richard ?grew up to be a handsome, tough-tender young man reminiscent of his father. He had been told the truth about his origin and has a deep desire to find his real father, or at least more about him, since Rick?s heroic at actions in Casablanca have become legendary.?

Eventually, ?After learning the cafe in the original was blown up by Nazis, he would link up with an Arab woman named Joan (inspired by?Joan Baez) and join in on her citizen?s movement to find Nazi outlaws.?

Warner Bros. turned the second treatment down in 1989, but with the 70th anniversary of the film upon us, renewed interest in the project has been sparked.

The biggest question of course is who could possibly be cast in these roles, particular that of Richard.??Aljean Harmetz told the?New York Post, ?There really are not many solid 20-year-old actors. Certainly not?Robert Pattinson, though maybe that guy who?s popping up everywhere,?Joseph Gordon-Levitt.?

Film historian?Leonard Maltin?as well as Humphrey Bogart?s son with?Lauren Bacall, Stephen, are both chilly to the idea of a sequel even despite it having come from Koch.? As Stephen puts it, ?If they want to make a movie about intrigue in North Africa, that?s fine, but bringing the specter of one of the greatest movies of all time into it makes it just another feeble attempt at?Casablanca 2.??There are certain films, like? The Wizard of Oz,?Gone With the Wind?and, of course,?Casablanca?that need to stay as pristine and perfect as they are.??

Obama on the road: a study in self-assurance

MENTOR, Ohio (AP) ? In his days in the state Senate in Springfield, Ill., Barack Obama was known as a pretty good poker player. While he might have known how to mask a winning hand then, he's not hiding the self-confidence he appears to have about the outcome of his re-election bid.

He's taken to running to his rope lines, as if one moment away from a voter is a moment too long. He soaks up his crowds, chin out, waiting for the din to die down. He jokes when he urges an overflow audience not to hesitate to take a friend, a neighbor, a girlfriend to vote early.

"You should convince them to vote for me before you before you drag them off to the polls," he says. But his demeanor says he just knows they will.

Obama, in the final three day campaign sprint of his life, betrays no sign of disquiet over the outcome of the race. His team, disciplined analysts of voter data and hard election metrics, shows no anxiety either.

Long-time political adviser David Axelrod, he of the droopy mustache and the hangdog look, is all smiles, vowing to shave off his 40-year-old facial hair if Obama loses Minnesota, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania (the bet drew a rebuke from the American Mustache Institute) Other aides, including deputy national security adviser Ben Rhodes, are growing beards until the election.

Senior adviser David Plouffe, who examines political movements like economists track rare market indicators, displays the same coolness he had at this time four years ago, when Obama's victory then was all but assured.

Now, these are professional practitioners of politics where misdirection and a good poker face are requisite arts. Presidents know how to hide bad news or put an upbeat face on gloom. In a nip-and-tuck election, he and his aides could be whistling past a graveyard.

But their body language in every way suggests they believe their numbers. And their own numbers say they are winning. To be sure, Obama has an easier path to the 270 electoral votes he needs to win re-election. He must hold on to leads in Pennsylvania, Michigan and Minnesota, and win in Ohio, Iowa and Wisconsin, states where public polls show him tied or with an advantage. Early voting in Iowa and Ohio show Democrats outnumber Republicans. For Obama, it is clear Ohio, with its 18 electoral votes, is the key.

In these final days, Obama has been piling on events. He had three stops in Ohio Friday. He has four stops Saturday, covering Ohio, Wisconsin, Iowa and Virginia. On Sunday, he'll travel to New Hampshire, Florida, Ohio (again), and Colorado.

His voice is raspy now, comforted backstage with sips of hot tea. But the familiar lean into the microphones is more pronounced. In Mentor, Ohio, Saturday, when he cried out "We've come too far to turn back now," his right arm stretched behind him as if to point to a departed place.

Among those traveling with him in this last push is longtime Chicago friend Marty Nessbitt.

"I've never seen him more exhilarated than he is right now," Axelrod said.

"He is very cognizant of the fact that this is his last campaign. This is the closing argument of his last campaign," he said. "He knows he's never going to do this again."

Stem Cell Jab May Restore Fertility in Males After Cancer Treatment

Some cancer drugs work by destroying rapidly dividing cells. As it is not possible to discriminate between cancer cells and other rapidly dividing cells in the body, the precursor cells involved in making sperm can be inadvertently wiped out leaving the patient infertile, said senior investigator Kyle Orwig from Magee-Womens Research Institute.

"Men can bank sperm before they have cancer treatment if they hope to have biological children later in their lives," Orwig said.

"But that is not an option for young boys who haven't gone through puberty, can't provide a sperm sample, and are many years away from thinking about having babies," he said.

Even very young boys, though, have spermatogonial stem cells in their testicular tissue that are poised to begin producing sperm during puberty.

To see whether it was possible to restore fertility using these cells, Dr. Orwig and his team biopsied the testes of prepubertal and adult male macaque monkeys and cryopreserved the cells from the small samples. The monkeys were then treated with chemotherapy agents known to impair fertility.

A few months after chemotherapy treatment, the team re-introduced each monkey's own spermatogonial stem cells back in to his testes using an ultrasound-guided technique. Sperm production was established from transplanted cells in nine out of 12 adult animals and three out of five prepubertal animals after they reached maturity.

In another test, spermatogonial stem cells from other unrelated monkeys were transplanted into infertile animals, which created sperm with the DNA fingerprint of the donor to allow easy tracking of their origin.

In lab tests, sperm from transplant recipients successfully fertilized 81 eggs, leading to embryos that developed to the morula and blastocyst stages, which are the stages that normally precede implantion in the mother's uterus. Donor parentage was confirmed in seven of the embryos.

"This study demonstrates that spermatogonial stem cells from higher primates can be frozen and thawed without losing their activity, and that they can be transplanted to produce functional sperm that are able to fertilize eggs and give rise to early embryos," Orwig added.

The study has been recently published I the journal Cell Stem Cell.

US-Israel relations won't be shaken no matter who wins Tuesday

It?s no secret that there?s been little love lost between President Obama and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who began their terms within months of each other ? and now both face reelection.

But despite that cool personal relationship, US-Israel ties are arguably stronger and deeper now than at any time since Israel?s founding in 1948. While some presidents have made a big impact on peace talks or key security issues ? George H. W. Bush?s handling of the 1991 Gulf war, for example ? the relationship tends to rest on shared principles rather than the personalities at the top.

?What you see in the media is the tip of the iceberg, what?s at the top, and you see some coolness,? says an Israeli official who declined to be named due to the sensitive election period. ?You think it reflects on the rest of the relationship and it doesn?t.?

Think you know the Middle East? Take our geography quiz.

Perhaps one of the strongest and most objective measures is trade. In the past decade, US-Israel trade has nearly doubled. US exports to Israel rose from $7 billion in 2002 to $13.9 billion last year, while US imports from Israel during the same window rose from $12.4 billion to $23 billion, according to the US Census Bureau.

The emergence of that ?fourth pillar? builds on a trio of more well-established bonds ? spiritual, democratic, and military, says Michael Oren, Israel?s ambassador to the US and author of ?Power, Faith, Fantasy: America in the Middle East 1773-present.?

DEEP-ROOTED RELATIONSHIP

These shared bonds date back to well before Israel?s founding ? Puritans once lobbied the Dutch government to ?transport Izraell?s sons and daughters ... to the Land promised their forefathers.?

And they have been strengthened by the tremendous upheaval in the Middle East over the past two years, Ambassador Oren argues.

The upheaval ?has underscored the fact that there is only one country in the region that is stable, that has never known a second of non-democratic rule, is militarily robust, and unequivocally pro-American,? he says in an interview by phone. ?There?s no other country remotely in the region like that.?

But one of Israel?s foremost experts on US-Israel ties has argued that the ?special relationship? has taken a distinct turn under Obama and finds itself at a ?critical crossroads.?

"The beginning of the Obama era signals that nothing lasts forever," wrote political scientist Abraham Ben-Zvi in his 2011 book, ?From Truman to Obama: The Rise and Early Decline of American-Israeli Relations.?

OBAMA 'DISTANT' FROM SHARED VALUES

Professor Ben-Zvi attributed that distance to Obama?s upbringing ? including a stint in Jakarta, Indonesia ? that were ?distant both geographically and psychologically from the formative American narrative,? according to translated excerpts published by the Israeli newspaper Haaretz.

Obama?s ?distance from the values and the beliefs that form the core of the pattern of special relations? helps explain his ?cool and reserved attitude toward Israel," wrote Ben-Zvi.

Many Israelis have criticized the fact that Obama?s opening foreign policy salvo ? a speech to the Islamic world from Cairo ? was never followed up by a visit to Jerusalem. He clashed with Mr. Netanyahu over Israel?s settlement policy in the West Bank, publicly slighted the prime minister during a White House visit, and declined to meet him altogether during Netanyahu?s visit to the United Nations in September. (For more perspective, the Monitor details five lower points from the history of US-Israel relations.)

Perhaps it?s not surprising that a clear majority of Israeli Jews (57 percent) prefer Obama?s opponent, Mitt Romney, especially given the country?s rightward shift in recent years. An October survey by the Israel Democracy Institute revealed that 17 percent of the Jewish public in Israel defines themselves as left or moderate left, with 55 percent saying they?re right or moderate right, and the rest in the center.

But despite Israelis? lack of warmth toward Obama, they have consistently placed a high premium on maintaining good ties with the US and have been unwilling to risk that, even in the case of Iran?s nuclear program, a threat some put on par with the Holocaust.

?All the studies we?ve done over the past 25 years show that the Israeli public ? puts great, great, great emphasis between Israel and the US and views strong bonds ? as a major factor in Israel?s national security,? Yehuda Ben Meir, co-director of INSS?s National Security and Public Opinion Project, told the Monitor in September. ?Since it?s been made very clear that the US is more than strongly opposed to a unilateral Israeli independent attack at this time ? [Israelis] don?t want it.?

Think you know the Middle East? Take our geography quiz.

How To Achieve Success In Multi-level Marketing | Internet ...

This article will provide you with some key information on how best to attack your MLM strategy, and ultimately achieve great success. It is important that you review the information in this article carefully.

Get your network contacts to engage and take over the conversation. Paying attention to what your customers say in their blogs and on their social media sites can improve your ability to adapt your marketing approach to meet their needs. You know what problems they want to solve, and where they want to be in life, so you can tailor your pitch to that.

You should allocate time for friends and family members because those relationships can help reduce the stress in your life. It is also important to maintain your connections with these important people. You may find that you must schedule more time for business initially. However, this time will pay off in profits and flexibility later on down the line.

It is natural that you wish to talk about yourself. Use this to your advantage by allowing your customers to talk to you about themselves. However, don?t discuss yourself too much. Let the customers do most of the talking so they can trust you.

It is important that you meet up with your team on a regular basis. You can only successfully function as a team if you are working together towards a common goal. To achieve this you need to meet regularly and share ideas. It is beneficial for the team?s well-being if you all get together on a regular basis.

Look at independent distributors to see how to model yourself when using MLM. This helps you to act and think in the same ways these distributors run their business, which helps you to achieve greater success.

Network marketing is a real business, so treat it like one. Many people fail due to not taking it seriously. While network marketing can take a lot of effort, if you want it to be, it could even be lucrative enough to be a full time job. Learn about it first before starting the program, and try to get the necessary training as well.

Try to get people that specialize in different areas of businesses to join your network. The business associates who work in selling or whom are commission based know how efforts relate to income, so those professionals are ideal to target. Business pros are likely to be more receptive to what you have to say.

Many think that quantity will result in more sales in multilevel marketing; however, it has been proven that quality beats quantity every time. Dedicated workers, focused on building out their own networks, will provide the foundation you need for success.

While it is common sense, it is worth noting that setting goals for yourself will bring you far in multi-level marketing. From start to finish, you must always set goals for yourself, and work to meet or exceed them. This will give you something to strive for and push you to keep going.

Be aware that the first contact a potential network marketing client has with you might well be your answering machine message. This first impression needs to be clear as well as positive. Tell them what info you need to get back in contact with them, and indicate when you will.

Participating in online forums is the best way to start building your multilevel marketing. You can find answers to questions, share tips of your own, or even find a mentor to help you one-on-one. Do an Internet search and find a forum that you enjoy, and spend a little time there each day picking up tips from others in the business.

Give your down line a reason to be involved and engaged. Is it possible they?re shy? Is there a problem they?re afraid to talk about? Try to get them to seek you out for ideas and to communicate with other people in the network. Every member of the team needs to put in effort and participate in the business.

Research and apply the best methods for finding new clients. If you want to thrive in multi-level marketing, you need a steady supply of new customers and new leads. You will limit the reach of your marketing circle if you use friends and family as a focal point. If you target your efforts toward new clients and people you have never met before, the possibilities become endless.

One of the best tips to be successful in network marketing is to believe that you can be. Dedicate your time and mental effort to networking marketing. If you can?t visualize your business as an actual entity, it never will be.

Don?t cut corners or try to save time by doing things the wrong way. Engaging in this kind of behavior only hurts your business and might force you to close your doors if you?re not careful. Cutting corners might seem to save you time or money now, but the truth is that taking the time to work hard is the only way you will achieve long-term success. Be patient and do quality work and you will see the pay-off in terms of bigger profits.

After you wake up every morning, you should get yourself ready as if you are going to your office, like grooming yourself neatly and putting on clothes appropriate for a business setting. Dressing properly, even if you spend your day at home on the computer, will make you feel more professional.

Neutral-linguistic programming makes for a fabulous multi-level marketing tool. Conversely, statements centering on the word ?you? are important when trying to convince someone else of an idea. ?

You can use the power of the Internet to use videos to drive traffic to the network marketing sites you have. A video is a cost effective way to create marketing campaigns that are content-rich.

It is said we should calculate what we spend every month and multiply it by nine to see how much we will need in the case of an emergency. Participating in multi-level marketing can give you that money plus much more!

True leaders in multilevel marketing are those individuals who enjoy helping others. Once you are at a place where you are trying to help people through what you are marketing, you will notice that you will start to see a rise in your profits.

To obtain better results in a multi-level marketing business, you should have a specific business plan. Goal setting, and a plan to follow through to meet those goals, can really help you to succeed. Calculate the needed number of sales and customers you need each month.

Do your research, and learn more about the product that is being promoted. You can?t invoke enthusiasm into others about a product if you don?t genuinely hold those feelings of enthusiasm yourself. Enthusiasm is paramount to network marketing; it is the essential ingredient, and you must exude it at all times.

If you lack the knowledge you need to be successful, your journey as a network marketer can be a bumpy one. You will have a much greater chance for success with MLM as long as you use the advice provided here.

(AP) ? Bankrupt tycoon Sean Quinn, once Ireland's richest man and a celebrated self-made billionaire, was sent to jail for nine weeks Friday after a judge found him guilty of stripping foreign assets from his crumbling business empire in violation of court orders.

Quinn, who has already lost control of his Irish-based businesses in a titanic legal fight with the former Anglo Irish Bank, was ruled in contempt of court for shifting ownership of his properties throughout Europe to friends and business fronts.

Irish courts in mid-2011 had ordered him to stop such asset-stripping immediately because the state-owned bank was entitled to those assets. But Anglo's investigators pursuing Quinn for ?2.8 billion ($3.65 billion) in unpaid loans demonstrated that Quinn had continued those efforts and forged falsely dated documents to try to conceal the subterfuge involving properties in Russia, Ukraine, Turkey and several other countries worth an estimated $430 million.

Quinn, 65, could have appealed High Court Justice Elizabeth Dunne's sentence to the Irish Supreme Court. But after a lunch break spent in discussion with lawyers and his eldest son, Quinn decided to go to jail immediately at Dublin's overcrowded Mountjoy Prison. He is scheduled for release Jan. 4.

Quinn's spectacular rise and fall provides the defining personal story of Ireland's 1990s rise as a property-obsessed Celtic Tiger ? and its stunning collapse in 2008 when that Anglo-driven construction boom turned to bust.

Quinn, son of a Northern Ireland border farmer, started his first construction-materials business as a teenager with a 50-pound ($80) loan. Throughout the 1990s and 2000s canny acquisitions allowed his empire to grow from cement to hotels, insurance to bottlemaking, his name adorning trucks and office blocks across Ireland. He built a fiercely loyal following in his native borderland, a traditionally jobs-poor region, where he based most of his enterprises.

But fatefully and inexplicably, he bet his family's riches on the continued runaway success of Anglo, the most daring of Ireland's property financiers, whose shares rose tenfold during the boom years. Worse, as Anglo's share price fell in the run-up to the global credit crisis in 2008, he kept doubling down ? and borrowed billions from Anglo itself to become the bank's top shareholder with up to 28 percent.

Ireland nationalized Anglo in early 2010, rendering Quinn's shares worthless and leaving taxpayers with a bill expected to exceed ?25 billion ($33 billion), including Quinn's loan defaults.

Quinn and his family contend in a separate, continuing lawsuit that Anglo's loans to them were largely illegal because the bank didn't disclose the true scale of its troubles, so they shouldn't have to repay them.

Lawyers for the former Anglo, now reorganized as a toxic debt-management agency called the Irish Bank Resolution Corp., insisted all Quinn assets, whether at home or abroad, must be seized to repay a bill owed ultimately to Irish taxpayers. Irish courts agreed.

During court proceedings over the past year, Quinn and his children were caught concealing the shifting of ownership for properties to foreign-based fronts and allies, including by making a secret $500,000 payment to a Ukrainian businesswoman to receive legal control of assets that included a shopping mall.

The judge, Dunne, ruled earlier this year that Quinn's defense was incredible and evasive. She postponed his jailing to Friday in hopes his family would reverse the asset-stripping moves in compliance with more than 30 court orders. She ruled Friday this had failed to happen and Quinn "has only himself to blame."

In June she ordered Quinn's son, Sean Jr., and his nephew Peter jailed for three months in punishment for their role in the Ukrainian and other asset-stripping. The son served his sentence but the nephew fled to neighboring Northern Ireland, where border communities staged several public rallies in support of the Quinns.

Why Some People Can Never Let Go: Why Commitment Is Not ...

Why Some People Can Never Let Go: Why Commitment is Not Always Perfect

When you say "I love you" to someone, it is supposed to be forever, at least, that is the plan for most couples. But, sometimes, even in the best of relationships, commitment is always forever and occasionally there comes the need to say goodbye. What happens when one person decides to walk away but the other person decides that they are going to hold on to the embers of a dying or dead love? It can be harder for the person who will not let go, especially if they do not want to face up to the facts.

Take a young couple from New York as an example. They got together while working at the same company and things were going well until some major changes came along. First, she was offered an executive position which would require a move from their home state to one of two different locations. In the midst of making this major life decision, the couple also found they were expecting a child. They agreed that on where they would move. They also agreed that eventually she would either return to work full time or would agree to have a second child. And, so, they moved and the child was born.

Fast forward nearly a decade: the man has had several different jobs at varying levels in the retail field, unable to stay put in any one position for very long. She has put off the concept of having that second child for as long as possible but now he is really starting to push her to get back to their original plans. They are fighting nearly all of the time now, acrimonious fights that spring up out of nowhere and spiral quickly out of control. Finally, she has had enough and she asks him to leave.

He is convinced that this is only a temporary thing, that she will need him to come back quickly. After all, he is sure that she cannot accomplish anything on her own, discounting the fact that she had been in a supervisory position over him when they met and had continued her education even after things had started going bad between them. What he does not realize is that things really are over between them, no matter how much he wishes and wills them to be better. He will be unable to move on with his own life, unable to accomplish any of the things that she has managed until he digests the fact that they are no longer a couple and never will be again.

Dawn sees 'young' surface on giant asteroid Vesta

ScienceDaily (Oct. 31, 2012) ? Like a Hollywood starlet constantly retouching her makeup, the giant asteroid Vesta is constantly stirring its outermost layer to present a young face. Data from NASA's Dawn mission show that a form of weathering that occurs on the moon and other airless bodies we've visited in the inner solar system does not alter Vesta's outermost layer in the same way. Carbon-rich asteroids have also been splattering dark material on Vesta's surface over a long span of the body's history.

The results are described in two papers released today in the journal Nature.

"Dawn's data allow us to decipher how Vesta records fundamental processes that have also affected Earth and other solar system bodies," said Carol Raymond, Dawn deputy principal investigator at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif. "No object in our solar system is an island. Throughout solar system history, materials have exchanged and interacted."

Over time, soils on Earth's moon and asteroids such as Itokawa have undergone extensive weathering in the space environment. Scientists see this in the accumulation of tiny metallic particles containing iron, which dulls the fluffy outer layer. Dawn's visible and infrared mapping spectrometer (VIR) and framing camera detected no accumulation of such tiny particles on Vesta, and this particular protoplanet, or almost-planet, remains bright and pristine.

Nevertheless, the bright rays of the youngest features on Vesta are seen to degrade rapidly and disappear into background soil. Scientists know frequent, small impacts continually mix the fluffy outer layer of broken debris. Vesta also has unusually steep topography relative to other large bodies in the inner solar system, which leads to landslides that further mix surface material.

"Getting up close and familiar with Vesta has reset our thinking about the character of the uppermost soils of airless bodies," said Carle Pieters, one of the lead authors and a Dawn team member based at Brown University, Providence, R.I. "Vesta 'dirt' is very clean, well mixed and highly mobile."

Early pictures of Vesta showed a variety of dramatic light and dark splotches on Vesta's surface. These light and dark materials were unexpected and now show the brightness range of Vesta is among the largest observed on rocky bodies in our solar system.

Dawn scientists suspected early on that bright material is native to Vesta. One of their first hypotheses for the dark material suggested it might come from the shock of high-speed impacts melting and darkening the underlying rocks or from recent volcanic activity. An analysis of data from VIR and the framing camera has revealed, however, that the distribution of dark material is widespread and occurs both in small spots and in diffuse deposits, without correlation to any particular underlying geology. The likely source of the dark material is now shown to be the carbon-rich material in meteoroids, which are also believed to have deposited hydrated minerals from other asteroids on Vesta.

To get the amount of darkening we now see on Vesta, scientists on the Dawn team estimate about 300 dark asteroids with diameters between 0.6 to 6 miles (1 and 10 kilometers) likely hit Vesta during the last 3.5 billion years. This would have been enough to wrap Vesta in a blanket of mixed material about 3 to 7 feet (1 to 2 meters) thick.

"This perpetual contamination of Vesta with material native to elsewhere in the solar system is a dramatic example of an apparently common process that changes many solar system objects," said Tom McCord, the other lead author and a Dawn team member based at the Bear Fight Institute, Winthrop, Wash. "Earth likely got the ingredients for life -- organics and water -- this way."

Launched in 2007, Dawn spent more than a year investigating Vesta. It departed in September 2012 and is currently on its way to the dwarf planet Ceres.

Parties Wonder Which Side's Polls Reflect Reality

A few days ago, I sat down with Rob Jesmer, the executive director of the National Republican Senatorial Committee. Jesmer is usually tight-fisted about his polling; he doesn't share it with members of the media when the numbers are good for his candidates, which avoids the inevitably uncomfortable dilemma when the numbers are bad for his candidates. But he wanted to open his books, if only for a peek, to demonstrate a phenomenon happening across the political spectrum these days: His polls look nothing like polls Democrats are conducting.

It's a constant refrain from both sides these days. The two parties, the outside groups that are playing such a big role this year, and even some candidates themselves are so dubious about their own numbers that they are employing two pollsters for one race, using one to double-check the other. What flummoxes them even more is that their own party's pollsters are getting similar results, while the other side is offering a completely different take.

Whether it is the presidential contest or battles for critical Senate and House seats, the smartest pollsters in the business have spent the past three weeks looking at exactly the same data and coming to dramatically different conclusions.

That can be explained, in part at least, by the volatile history of the last three election cycles. The nearly decade-long erosion of trust in government, the economic recession, the collapse of the housing bubble and the partisan brawls in Washington are all factors that contributed to three straight wave election cycles. Elections in 2006 and 2008 overwhelmingly favored Democrats. The 2010 midterms overwhelmingly favored Republicans.

This year, there's no wave cresting the week before Election Day, meaning Tuesday's results will reflect the will of a deeply and bitterly divided nation, roughly the same thing we saw in 2004. We're about to see the new political normal -- but after six years of dramatic waves, no one really knows what normal is supposed to look like.

Democrats argue that history shows an inexorable march toward a larger and more diverse electorate. In every election since 1992, the electorate has grown. Bill Clinton won when 83 million people cast a ballot in 1992; 100 million were cast in 2000; and 129 million ballots were cast in 2008.

And while voters tell pollsters they hate politics and politicians, their actions don't tell the same story. One prominent Democratic pollster suggested a counterintuitive cause: The explosion of cable news channels means politics is available all the time; the constant, unceasing news cycle keeps people engaged; the increased polarization of the electorate means voters identify more closely with their party, their team; and the proliferation of absentee ballots and early voting access makes it easier than ever to vote. That which voters say they hate most may actually be what's keeping them engaged.

In every cycle since 1992, the number of African American and Hispanic voters has gone up as a share of the electorate. In 1992, exit polls showed 83 percent of the electorate was white. By 2008, white voters made up just 74 percent of the electorate.

There's no question that President Obama's 2008 campaign, which focused on turning out new low-propensity voters in minority communities, helped inflate non-white voters' influence in the electorate. In Virginia alone, the non-white share of the electorate spiked from 21 percent in 2006 to 30 percent just two years later, a virtually unprecedented leap. The question is how many of those voters come back to the polls in 2012.

Republicans and Democrats alike believe the African American vote is unlikely to change between 2008 and 2012. But they differ dramatically on the number of Hispanic voters who will show up at the polls -- a key factor in critical battleground states like Colorado and Nevada. Republicans believe turnout will be down, depressed by Obama's failure to pursue immigration reform during his first term. Democrats think the booming number of Hispanic residents means their share of the electorate will only increase.

The same argument happens over younger voters. In 2008, 18 percent of the electorate was made up of voters between 18 and 29 years old. That's higher than the percentage has been in recent presidential years, when the youth vote has made up around 15 or 16 percent. Republicans believe the younger share of the electorate will slide slightly, and that Obama will win fewer of those voters anyway.

The manifestation of these disagreements is evident in polling weights. Most Republican pollsters are using something close to a 2008 turnout model, with the same percentage of white, black and Hispanic voters as the electorate that first elected Obama. Most Democratic pollsters are a little more bullish on minority turnout, which helps explain some of the difference between the two sides.

Add in a population that's changing its habits and pollsters have to contend with additional confusing factors. The number of Americans without land line phones is growing, particularly among younger voters. Those voters are much more difficult to convince to complete a poll, surveyors say.

What concerns Republicans most is the fact that media polls seem to track more closely with Democratic internals than with the GOP's numbers. Internal surveys conducted for candidates like George Allen in Virginia, Richard Mourdock in Indiana and Josh Mandel in Ohio draw much rosier conclusions than polls conducted for their Democratic counterparts Tim Kaine, Joe Donnelly and Sherrod Brown. And media surveys, at least in Virginia and Ohio, show Kaine and Brown winning (restrictive Indiana laws make polling prohibitively expensive there).

Republicans say their party is a victim of media bias -- but not in the standard Lamestream Media sort of way. Pollsters on both sides try to persuade public surveyors that their voter turnout models are more accurate reflections of what's going to happen on Election Day. This year, GOP pollsters and strategists believe those nonpartisan pollsters are adopting Democratic turnout models en masse.

Regardless of the cause, strategists on both sides acknowledge the difference in their internal polling. Republicans believe Democrats are counting far too much on low-propensity voters and a booming minority turnout that isn't going to materialize on Election Day. Democrats believe Republicans are hopelessly reliant on an electorate that looks far more like their party than the nation as a whole. The day after Election Day, somebody's pollsters are going to be proven seriously wrong.

Deep down, both parties secretly worry it's their side that is missing the boat.
