It's called "dog shaming" and it's a viral trend that's making some people howl.
Dirty dogs are coming clean online, on sites like dog-shaming.com. While owners posting the?pictures of their pups may get laughs,?the dogs aren't really ashamed.
"Not one bit," said Sarah Babcock of the Richmond SPCA.?"I suspect there's an awful lot of dog treats doled out trying to get them to hold the sings for the photographers."
Babcock believes the trend is cute and harmless, but also says instead of just shaming, you can also teach your dogs to correct their behavior.
"I think, 'Wow! So many of these animals could be helped if the people really knew where to go for resources and could get the help they need," she said.
The Richmond?SPCA points out that it has a behavior help line and classes available, in case you want to do more than just shame your pet next time it makes a mess on the kitchen floor.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Not ready for a new iPhone? Don't worry. Many software features are coming to older iPhones as well.
Apple has said that its iOS 6 software will sport more than 200 new features, though some won't be available on all devices. The new features include an updated mapping service and better integration with Facebook.
On Wednesday, Apple showed off the virtual assistant Siri giving driving directions. Siri will also let you post Facebook status updates you speak out to her.
There's also an enhancement to email, so you can deem certain people "VIPs" and locate emails from them more easily.
As announced in June, iOS 6 will be a free upgrade for iPhones released since 2009 ? the 3GS, 4 and 4S models. It will also be available on the iPad 2 and this year's iPad model and newer iPod Touch devices.
The update for older devices will be available starting next Wednesday. The new iPhone 5, with iOS 6 built-in, will be out two days later, on Sept. 21, in the U.S., Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore and the U.K. Advance orders will begin this Friday. It will be available in 22 more countries on Sept. 28.
Here are some highlights of iOS 6:
? Maps.
Apple's mobile devices will have a mapping program, built in-house.
In the past, Apple has given prominent billing to Google Inc.'s mapping app. But the two companies have increasingly become rivals as people buy more devices running Google's Android operating system. Google also has been keeping some features, including turn-by-turn directions spoken aloud, exclusive to Android.
Apple's new Maps application will have a voice navigation feature. It will have real-time traffic data and offer alternative routes as traffic conditions change.
It will also include "flyover" three-dimensional images taken by helicopters hired by the company to fly over major cities. Google has been dispatching its own planes to produce similar 3D images.
Apple's map program will be integrated with its Siri virtual assistant so that you can ask for directions and pose other questions.
? Facebook.
The new software promises better integration with Facebook. The upgrade will enable you to log into Facebook just once, and then you will be able to post to the social network from a variety of apps. You can also post about websites directly from Apple's Safari browser.
Siri will be there to post status updates you dictate to her. Siri will show you what she's going to post so you can correct typos before you approve it.
Facebook will be integrated with Apple's online app store so that you can declare that you "like" specific apps there, as well as songs and movies in iTunes.
Events in Facebook's calendar and birthdays of Facebook friends will also appear on your phone's calendar.
? Siri.
IOS 6 will have enhancements to Siri, which interprets voice commands and talks back to the user. It is also coming to the iPad for the first time.
Siri, introduced last October with the iPhone 4S, is supposed to get better at fielding questions about movies, restaurants and other things.
Apple is partnering with Yelp Inc. so Siri can include ratings and prices of restaurants when you ask her about places to eat. The company is also partnering with OpenTable Inc. to make reservations.
Siri will now be available in more languages and more countries.
Apple also says it's working with car manufacturers to let you use a button on the steering wheel to talk to Siri, allowing you to keep your hands on the road. Apple says General Motors Co., BMW AG and Daimler AG's Mercedes are among the automakers that have promised to offer Siri integration in the next 12 months.
? Calls
Don't want to be disturbed?
Apple's new software will give you more options for preventing messages and text notifications from disturbing you at night, for instance.
You can control how and when you get back to people. If you can't call someone back right away, you can set a reminder to call that person back later or have a text message sent directly to the caller.
There's a "call when you leave" feature that reminds you to call back when you are leaving a building or office. The phone can detect when you are leaving.
? Passbook
Apple's new Passbook feature will be a central place to keep your boarding passes, tickets and gift cards.
When you get to a Starbucks, for instance, the device will bring up your gift card if you have one and if you have the location feature turned on. Likewise, when you get to a movie theater or baseball stadium, the ticket will pop up. Passbook will also alert you to gate changes and flight delays once you have a boarding pass stored.
Passbook could be the foundation for a new digital commerce hub for Apple, though the iPhone 5 doesn't have a "near-field communication" chip that enables payment information to be transferred by tapping a device on a terminal at a checkout stand. A few Android phones use this technology to process payments with a feature known as Google Wallet.

The new iPods were quite a surprise at Apple's iPhone launch event, not because they exist, but because they're actually impressive. The iPod?Nano?? always the product with which Apple takes crazy chances and aggressively?switches up designs?? is fresh?little plaything, while the iPod?Touch has grown up to become a serious product in its own right.
The Nanos are still not totally to be taken seriously, but the larger screen means that you can do more without getting lost in the interface ? more scrolling, more options. And added Bluetooth means it can feed music to speaker systems and?cars wirelessly.
One thing to note:?Apple has done away with the weird little clock faces that were available on the last generation Nano. I guess the whole trend of wearing a Nano on your wrist as an oversize watch has faded.
The Touch is better (and thinner) than ever, and now comes with Siri. During my short demo, we almost got it to book us a restaurant reservation, as you can see below.
The screen, which is the same Retina display on the iPhone 5, really does come to life on the iPod?Touch. And when you look at an app like iPhoto, you realize that the extra pixels give you a little wiggle room, even?on a screen that remains relatively small.
The only problem that I see with the iPod Touch is its price. Will anyone buy a non-phone at $299? Phones can be cheaper because we pay carriers monthly, and those carriers eat some of the cost. There's no benefit like that here. I don't know how well it can compete, especially with a mini?iPad rumored to be?in the wings.?

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Yosemite National Park has begun trapping and killing deer mice whose growing numbers may have helped create the conditions that led to a hantavirus outbreak that has infected eight park visitors, killing three, public health officials said on Tuesday.
Yosemite officials in recent weeks have warned some 22,000 people who stayed in the park in California over the summer that they may have been exposed to the rodent-borne lung disease, which kills over a third of those infected.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has also sounded a worldwide alert, saying visitors to the park's popular Curry Village lodging area between June and August may be at risk. Park officials have closed nearly 100 tent cabins in Curry Village infested with deer mice, which carry the virus.
"From an ecological perspective, it appears that there was an unnaturally high population of rodents in the area. We are being proactive and reducing the population," Danielle Buttke, a veterinary epidemiologist for the National Park Service, told Reuters.
Buttke said the mice were being trapped in several areas of the park for monitoring purposes but believed they were being killed only in the Curry Village area, using snap traps.
Seven of the eight people confirmed to have been infected are believed to have contracted the virus in the village, while one stayed elsewhere in the park.
Public health officials trapped three times as many deer mice in the park's Tuolumne Meadows last week than were caught in a 2008 period, indicating that the deer mice population has grown, said Dr. Vicki Kramer, chief of vector-borne diseases at the state Public Health Department.
Dr. Charles Chiu, an infectious disease specialist at the University of California, San Francisco, said the growing deer mice population might help explain the outbreak.
NO CURE
"This could be an explanation for why we're seeing this particular cluster," Chiu said. "What you may have is the perfect storm of conditions: increasing prevalence of deer mice and campers with the same or common exposure to (lodging) infested with deer mice."
Officials are concerned that more Yosemite visitors could still fall ill because the virus can incubate for up to six weeks after exposure. There is no cure for the syndrome but early detection and hospital care increase survival rates.
The virus can lead to severe breathing difficulties and death. Early flu-like symptoms include headache, fever, muscle aches, shortness of breath and coughing.
Last month, authorities began trapping rodents in Yosemite to examine whether deer mice there were more likely to be infected with the hantavirus than deer mice elsewhere, Buttke said, but found they were not.
When authorities first identified the Yosemite hantavirus outbreak, rangers balked at the idea of trying to exterminate the deer mice, arguing that the mice play an important role in the Yosemite ecosystem.
But when they realized the deer mice population had swelled, they decided to thin it in an effort to rebalance the ecosystem, Buttke said. She theorized that weather combined with visitors bringing in food led to Yosemite's abundance of deer mice.
Deer mice release hantavirus in their urine and droppings. People can contract the virus when they breath contaminated air. Children rarely contract the virus, probably because it is often transmitted when adults sweep or vacuum droppings or cut and stack wood.
People usually contract the virus in small, confined spaces with poor ventilation. They also can become infected by eating contaminated food, touching tainted surfaces or being bitten by infected rodents.
The disease has killed 65 Californians and some 600 Americans since hantavirus was identified in 1993, but it has never been known to be transmitted between humans.

NEW YORK (AP) - Gio Gonzalez was totally prepared to take on the New York Mets. A question about a possible Cy Young Award? That threw him.
Gonzalez earned his big league-leading 19th victory and the Washington Nationals backed him with three home runs to beat the listless Mets 5-1 Monday night.
Gonzalez is certainly a prime contender for the top pitching prize. But he playfully put up his hands when the subject was broached after the game.
"When you start looking at one thing, it'll drive you crazy," he said. "If it comes, it comes."
Mets knuckleballer R.A. Dickey has 18 wins and a better ERA than Gonzalez, and starts against the Nationals on Tuesday night. Asked whether he was eager for Washington to face Dickey - and perhaps dent his Cy Young chances - manager Davey Johnson had a simple answer.
"Not really," he said.
Kurt Suzuki put the Nationals ahead with a home run right after catcher Kelly Shoppach dropped his wind-blown foul popup for an error. Ryan Zimmerman launched a two-run shot later in the third inning and Ian Desmond added a two-run drive in the fourth.
That was plenty for Gonzalez (19-7) and the team with the best record in the majors. The lefty gave up three hits over six innings, none until Scott Hairston homered in the fourth.
Gonzalez worked around five walks and extended his career high for wins. He seemed relaxed enough, chatting with fans in the front row while waiting in the on-deck circle in the sixth as Suzuki batted.
Gonzalez matched a season high for walks, yet lowered his ERA to 2.93.
"Couldn't find the strike zone," he said. "Drank a little too much coffee. I don't know what it was."
The Nationals opened a six-game swing that ends this weekend in Atlanta, where they'll play their closest pursuers in the NL East.
It had already been a jocular trip for the Nationals by the time they arrived in New York. As part of rookie hazing that is traditional in baseball culture, the club made its newcomers dress up as the U.S. Olympic women's gymnastics team - including red leotards and gold medals - for the train ride from Washington to Manhattan and dinner out Sunday night.
Teen star Bryce Harper wore the outfit, then had a wardrobe malfunction against the Mets. He broke his belt while diving for Andres Torres' liner in the fourth, and quickly hustled to the Nationals' bullpen in center field for a loaner.
The Mets lost their fourth in a row, deepening their drought at Citi Field. They tied a team record by scoring three or fewer runs for the 11th straight game at home, matching the mark last done in 1979.
"I've done this long enough to know that you don't ever give up," manager Terry Collins said. "You don't ever stop, you don't ever stop grinding it out. You don't ever stop walking through the locker room every day making sure the guys are upbeat, that they're positive, trying to move forward. That doesn't change one bit."
David Wright and his teammates have gone 106 straight innings at home without scoring more than one run.
Collins tried a timing adjustment, changing when his starters took batting practice. He had them hit later, wanting to cut down the 2 1/2-hour gap between BP and game time.
"We're kind of grasping at straws," Collins admitted.
While Andy Murray was winning the U.S. Open tennis tournament right across the street, Mets rookie Collin McHugh (0-2) was serving up home runs. Suzuki hit his fourth, Zimmerman got his 21st and Desmond connected for his 22nd, all off the 25-year-old righty making his third major league start.
Zimmerman's shot was retrieved by a fan dressed in Mets orange who hopped onto the black batter's eye in dead center field and danced with the souvenir, drawing cheers from the crowd.
NOTES: Dickey (18-4, 2.64 ERA) will oppose RHP Jordan Zimmermann (10-8, 2.99). ... Harper said he doesn't expect to start against Dickey - the rookie is 0 for 10 with six strikeouts vs. the knuckleballer, no matter where he stands or what he swings. "In, out, up, down, back and forth, light, heavy, tried it all. Just can't hit the guy," Harper said. ... Gonzalez has beaten the Mets three times in the last two months. ... Zimmerman has a 14-game hitting streak. ... Washington is 12-4 against the Mets this year. ... Torres took away an extra-base hit from Danny Espinosa with a leaping grab.

ScienceDaily (Sep. 10, 2012) ? Colorado State University researchers discovered that a combination of starlight and the upper atmosphere's own subtle glow can help satellites see Earth's clouds on moonless nights.
During the daytime, ultraviolet light from the sun bombards Earth's upper atmosphere and breaks apart gaseous molecules and atoms. During the nighttime, these molecules and atoms recombine, emitting faint visible light in the process.
This "air glow" combined with starlight illuminates clouds at night, and by using a new and improved satellite instrument, scientists can take advantage of this signal for the first time from space, according to a groundbreaking new study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences by Steve Miller, a research scientist at CSU's Cooperative Institute for Research in the Atmosphere (CIRA), along with colleagues from National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Northrop Grumman and the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD).
Miller and his research team captured the data from a new advanced weather-and-climate monitoring satellite. The satellite, a joint venture between NASA and NOAA, is called the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership, or Suomi NPP, and carries five advanced instruments at an orbit approximately 512 miles above Earth's surface.
"We actually thought there might be a problem with the instrument, at first," said Miller. "It took us a minute to realize that what we were seeing was something real and extraordinary."
This new ability to see clouds at night could have significant implications for weather and climate observations for forecasters and research scientists alike.
"This development is exciting and impressive," said Mary Kicza, assistant administrator for NOAA's Satellite and Information Service. "This could be especially useful to our meteorologists in areas like Alaska, where the winter months have long periods of darkness."
Among these sensors is the Visible/Infrared Imager/Radiometer Suite (VIIRS), which includes a "Day/Night Band" that is sensitive to extremely low levels of light. Researchers at CIRA, collaboration between CSU and NOAA, perform many instrument check-out activities for the NPP mission.
"The Day/Night Band is a new capability for NOAA users," said Mitch Goldberg, program scientist at NOAA Joint Polar Satellite System (JPSS) Office. "We are very encouraged by this remarkable discovery by the CIRA scientists."
The scientists were applying methods to reduce "noise" in the Day/Night Band measurements, when they found that the instrument was sensitive enough to see clouds and other objects in what would appear to the human eye as complete darkness. The new capability will be useful for improving our views of very low clouds and features such as sea ice at night, potentially benefiting travel and commerce.
"Most weather satellites aren't even sensitive enough to see the lights from a large city like Denver, much less the reflected moonlight, which is nearly a million times fainter than sunlight. These air glow/starlight sources are 100-1000 times fainter still," Miller said. "Instead of using visible light, nighttime observations are typically relegated to infrared (heat) measurements, where near-surface features (such as fog) can blend into their surroundings because they have nearly the same temperature."
The Day/Night Band was intended to advance the low light-sensor technology pioneered in the 1960's on the DoD's meteorological satellite program, but no one expected it to see clouds on moonless nights, Miller said. "In some ways, the day just got twice as long and that's pretty exciting for scientists," he added.
In addition to the clouds, Miller said that sensitivity of the Day/Night Band to direct emissions from air glow allows the sensor to see waves moving through the upper atmosphere, forced by thunderstorms below -- which appear like ripples in a pond atop some of the stronger storms.
Goldberg added that the NOAA JPSS Proving Ground supports activities promoting the use of the Day/Night Band for our National Weather Service.
"We are very fortunate to have Dr. Miller as part of our team," Goldberg said.
"To most of us, it's a small revelation in itself that the night really isn't as dark as we might think," said Miller. "We're literally seeing our world in a 'new light.'
CIRA was established as an interdisciplinary partnership between the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and CSU in 1980 to accelerate the transition of cutting edge atmospheric science research into the hands of operational users for societal benefit. CIRA researchers on a daily basis translate data collected by globally distributed satellites and output from computers to a scientific and practical understanding that allows researchers to better define and predict changes to weather and climate.

Missouri State of Mind:: Last week, the Insurance Department of the State of Kansas held a three-hour hearing to collect public input on what should constitute the state's essential health benefits benchmark plan under the ACA. No, Gov. Brownback did not attend?.
What's at stake? A great deal, apparently. Under the ACA, the states may choose to participate in the creation of the models or templates for minimum essential benefits to be offered through their state exchanges, or the federal government will perform this function for them. Each state has until September 30th? [(]there are rumors of some give on that date[)]. A number of states have been busy benchmarking existing coverage in their states and developing recommendations on minimum essential benefits?. If you're interested in seeing the work being done on this in other states, you could look here?

States? must meet certain federal guidelines and benchmark off of certain popular basic insurance plans found in the state. For Kansas, this would likely mean? a basic health insurance plan significantly richer than its current Medicaid benefit. That may be the rub.

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) ? With his season essentially on the line, Jeff Gordon used a vintage drive to rally his way into NASCAR's championship chase.
The 41-year-old Gordon battled an ill-handling car early Saturday night, then took off at the end to finish second to race winner Clint Bowyer at Richmond International Raceway. His finish wrested the final berth in the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship away from Kyle Busch.
"How 'bout Gordon!" yelled winner Bowyer, "he was terrible all night!"
Not when it mattered.
The four-time NASCAR champion got major adjustments to his Chevrolet through the race, fell a lap down, then nearly drove the wheels off in his bid to pick up as many positions as possible. He trailed Busch by 12 points at the start of the race, and beat him by three to claim the final spot in the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship field.
"I felt like we won the race," Gordon said. "What that was over, they told me I was in the Chase, we made it ? I was ecstatic. I was going nuts.
"To me, after you have that kind of effort, fall back, them come up there and finish second, almost win the race."
Busch finished 16th, fading after poor pit strategy and a slow final stop to miss the Chase for the second time in his career. Team owner Joe Gibbs met Busch on pit road and leaned into the car window to console the angry driver.
"We missed. That's it. Plain and simple," said Busch, adding Gibbs told him, "'Handle it the right way.' There's no right way to handle this situation."
It was opposite emotions on pit road, as Gordon's team celebrated. He qualified second, but was terrible early in a race that was marred by three different rain showers. The start was delayed almost two hours, and a second shower caused a stoppage that lasted just under 52 minutes.
Gordon was livid when he exited his car on pit road during the red flag.
"I was pretty ticked off that we got that far behind," Gordon said. "When you have that kind of a start to a race, you don't have a lot of hope that you're going to get it turned around."
But his Hendrick Motorsports team got it figured out during the third and final rain shower.
NASCAR called a caution for rain, and Gordon was one of eight top drivers to head to pit road. Denny Hamlin, the leader, stayed out apparently in a strategy that relied on the race being stopped once and for all for rain.
Instead, NASCAR went back to green and Hamlin led a group of drivers down pit road in a desperate late pit stop. Busch was part of a group that had pitted shortly before the rain so he stayed out and was fourth on the restart. But everyone who had pitted at the start of the caution was on fresh tires ? Gordon included ? and they quickly drove through the field.
It put Busch back in traffic, and when he finally did go to pit road, a slow stop further hurt his chances.
He never had another chance as Gordon, a four-time champion, picked his way through the field to his second-place finish. It came a week after he failed to move Hamlin out of the way on the final restart at Atlanta, a decision that cost him the win and ate away at him all week.
"I went from last week being the most disappointed I've ever been to finish second this week, being the most excited I've ever been to finish second," Gordon said.
Hamlin, who went into his home track as winner of the last two races, led a race-high 202 laps but faded to 18th. He still goes into next week's Chase opener as the top seed based on his series-best four "regular season" victories.
Hamlin goes into Chicago up three points over five-time champion Jimmie Johnson, defending champion Tony Stewart and Brad Keselowski, who are all tied for second.
The fifth slot in the Chase went to Greg Biffle, then Bowyer, who got three more bonus points Saturday night.
The seventh spot went to Dale Earnhardt Jr., then Daytona 500 winner Matt Kenseth, Kevin Harvick, and Martin Truex Jr., who along with Bowyer gave Michael Waltrip Racing two berths in the first Chase appearance for the organization.
The wild-card slots went to Kasey Kahne and Gordon, who ensured all four Hendrick Motorsports drivers made the 12-driver field.
It was a bizarre night as rain soaked the track about 90 minutes before the scheduled start. The delay prevented Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney from giving the command to start the engines ? he was long gone when the race started almost two hours late.
It became clear immediatly that Gordon was struggling. He dropped through the field, and radioed his team "I'm just hanging on" to the car.
Back at the front, it was a two-driver race between Hamlin and Earnhardt, who combined to lead 269 of the 400 laps.
With Hamlin leading Earnhardt and Gordon, a lap down, trying to keep Busch in sight, the rain resumed and NASCAR called a caution. It gave the drivers a chance to pit, Hamlin beat Earnhardt off pit road to maintain the lead, but NASCAR's attempt to go back to green failed when the rain picked up in intensity.
The race was stopped 48 laps before the halfway point, the mark it becomes official, and the cars parked on pit road as the drivers waited out the rain.
Keselowski thought it was a waste of time.
"Let's race. I'm not afraid to drive in the rain," he smiled. "We're supposed to be good drivers, right? Let's just do it once."
They waited for the track to dry, went back at it, and the complexion quickly changed.
The final caution for rain jumbled the field, put Stewart out front with teammate Ryan Newman charging hard. Newman had to win to get into the Chase, and Stewart let him by. But Newman led just 13 laps before Bowyer took over the top spot and never looked back. "Unbelievable," Bowyer said.

(Reuters) - A Pakistani military helicopter plucked a young Christian girl accused of blasphemy from a prison yard on Saturday and flew her to a secret location after she was granted bail.
Live broadcasts showed heavily-armed police surrounding Rimsha Masih, believed to be no older than 14, covering her face with a green scarf as she walked to the helicopter.
A judge granted Masih bail on Friday and her lawyers are applying to have charges that she burned pages from the Koran dismissed after a local cleric was detained on suspicion of planting false evidence to stir resentment against Christians.
Even before that arrest, Masih's case provoked international concern as she could face execution under Pakistan's blasphemy law despite her young age and reported mental problems.
The dramatic nature of Masih's release underlined the fear for her life.
The lawyer prosecuting her suggested she could be lynched if found not guilty. Blasphemy charges are frequently followed by deadly riots against minority communities.
Despite international condemnation, the blasphemy law still enjoys widespread support among ordinary Pakistanis.
Two high-ranking government officials who had suggested its reform were shot dead, one by his own bodyguard. Lawyers threw rose petals at that killer and the judge who convicted him was forced to flee the country.
The number of cases brought under the law is rising rapidly and rights groups fear it is mostly being used to settle personal vendettas.
Since 1987, there have been almost 250 blasphemy cases, according to Pakistani thinktank the Center for Research and Security Studies.
It said 52 people had been killed after being accused of blasphemy since 1990.

Coca-Cola to introduce Dasani fruity flavor drops. Coca-Cola sees huge potential. Next flavor drops: tea?

The world's largest beverage company is introducing its?Dasani?Drops in coming weeks, which can be squeezed into water for some on-the-spot fruity flavor. And Coca-Cola is betting that there's big potential for growth.
"I think there's an opportunity beyond just flavored waters," said John Roddey, vice president of Coca-Cola's water, tea and coffee business in North America.
Although there are no set plans yet, Roddey says the next logical category for liquid drops would be tea. That's because drinks with higher sugar content are harder to turn into a liquid concentrate.
The Coca-Cola Co. isn't the first to come out with flavor drops. The category was pioneered by Kraft Food Inc.'s MiO, which was introduced in March of last year and has quickly spawned copycats, including by supermarkets that sell store-brand versions.
The drops are popular because they come in small, portable containers that can be easily tucked into a purse or even back pocket. And unlike powdered drink packets, people can decide how much or little they want to squirt into their water. A small bottle can also have more than two dozen servings, meaning people save money they'd spend on bottled teas or enhanced waters.
As with Kraft's MiO drinks,?Dasani?Drops use artificial sweeteners and have zero calories. That could be a concern for consumers who don't like artificial sweeteners, which often have a strong aftertaste.
Now Coca-Cola is preparing to leverage its scale to stake a claim in the category. Roddey says the plan is to make?Dasani?Drops available wherever its?Dasani?bottled water is sold, including on supermarket shelves, in checkout aisles or in the refrigerated sections in convenience stores.
"We're looking to make this as broad as we can," he said.
Dasani?Drops, which will cost about $4, will start hitting shelves in early October. The company is starting with four flavors, but is already planning to introduce additional flavors next year. Each bottle has about 32 servings.
Without mentioning Kraft's MiO by name, Roddey said Coca-Cola saw the early success other brands had and realized the category had huge potential.
Kraft has said that MiO sales through the first half of the year have more than doubled to more than $100 million. The name means "mine" in Italian, suggesting users can make drinks however they like.
For a beverage giant, however, the introduction of liquid flavor drops is more complicated. Coca-Cola says the drops will boost consumption of water, whether it's tap water or bottled. Ideally, of course, people would use the drops with its?Dasani?water, which already saw sales volume rise 13 percent in the first half of the year, according to industry tracker Beverage Digest.
Overall consumption of bottled water has also been growing, although at a much slower pace than in the early 2000s, according to Beverage Digest, which reported last week that Coca-Cola planned to introduce the drops.
The drops may hurt Coca-Cola's other units, however. The company also makes enhanced waters, such as Vitaminwater Zero.
