Disc golf sails into Tomlinson Run State Park

NEW MANCHESTER - Mark Twain famously quipped that golf was "a good walk spoiled." He might have changed his assessment if he'd had the chance to play disc golf at Tomlinson Run State Park.

It's not so much a walk, but a hike. And disc golf doesn't have all the stresses of traditional golf. Players throw a disc like a Frisbee, only smaller, and try to get it into a "hole" that looks like an elevated metal cage.

"It's a growing sport," said Jesse Mestrovic, assistant superintendent at Tomlinson Run and designer of its new golf course. "It gets you to go outside, and that's what we need in today's society."

The 18-hole disc golf course opened at Tomlinson Run on June 30 after months of fundraising and development. Mestrovic, 26, hopes the course draws new attention and more visitors to the state park.

"It is really busy on the weekends," he said. "I think it's growing. I see more people every week playing, and it's getting positive reviews."

Mestrovic began exploring the idea for a disc golf course last November, when he approached the Tomlinson Run State Park Foundation about funding.

Then he contacted local disc golf enthusiast Kelsey Hedrick, an East Liverpool police officer, about making a presentation to the foundation. Hedrick is the designer of the 27-hole disc golf course at Thompson Park in East Liverpool.

"I knew they had a really nice course, and I heard some good things about it," Mestrovic said. After Hedrick's presentation, the foundation agreed to fund most of the $7,000 project.

Mestrovic proceeded to design the course with Hedrick's help. The two worked on the front nine together, and Mestrovic made adjustments to their plan for the back nine.

The front nine circumscribes the swimming pool in a clockwise fashion and is more suited for beginners. The back nine is more challenging, running into rough terrain along Tomlinson Run creek and ending at the old tennis courts.

The average hole length is 340 feet. Most of the holes are par 3, but three in the back nine are par 4. The tee box for the 11th hole overlooks a rocky cliff, while tee off for the fifth hole is from a rocky creek bed. The longest hole is 15 at 430 feet.

Mestrovic, a native of Wheeling, said he got interested in disc golf while attending West Virginia University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in biology and a master's in parks, recreation and tourism. He thought the sport would be a good fit for Tomlinson Run.

"I wanted to bring something new and exciting to the park," he said, "and at little cost." The course at Tomlinson Run is free.

After securing the funding, Mestrovic ordered the equipment in March and had it installed with the help of park staff. The course was designed so that it would not interfere with other park activities, Mestrovic said.

A second West Virginia state park, Pipestem Resort State Park, added a disc golf course earlier this year. Other nearby disc golf courses include the one at Thompson Park, a nine-hole course at Chester City Park, and the 18-hole Beatty Park Disc Golf Course in Steubenville.

The disc golf course at Tomlinson Run already has a listing on the website of the Professional Disc Golf Association.

NJ Population Shifting Away From Suburbia [AUDIO]

For the past 50 years, the American dream was all about buying a home in the Jersey suburbs, but that?s now started to change.

Flickr User Hoboken Condos

Rutgers economist James Hughes says as the economy slowly improves, ?A demographic and economic transformation is taking place ? and for the next 10 years or so, suburbia is not the favored location.?

Hughes says, ?The 3 dynamic growth sectors are the children of the baby boomers- the eco-boomers ? in their 20?s and 30?s ? it?s a rental housing generation ? they want to live in high activity environments, such as Jersey City and Hoboken.? They don?t want to live in a far-flung suburb? The second growth sector?are aging baby boomers ? they are resizing in the housing market- they?re rattling around, by themselves, in a big suburban single family dwelling ? they?d rather be in a walking environment ? and the 3rd growth sector?are foreign born population.? New Jersey ranks 3rd among all the states in the percentage of the population foreign born ? and their location choices tend to be much more urban and much more dense.?

He adds, ?All 3 of those in the short term, really point to rental housing demand, higher density housing configurations, not single family units?I think we?re going to see real segmentation among the suburbs ? some suburbs, with certain attributes ? are still going to be favored locations- other will not? Many suburban homes were built between 1950 and 1970, and the question is ? that stock is now aging, how viable is that in the 21st century??

Eventually however, Hughes says, ?Those eco-boomers are going to become active parenting adults, and so if we?re looking maybe 10 years down the road, we may now have a reverse-swing to suburbia.?

(AP Photo/The Wichita Eagle/Kansas.com, Jaime Green)

(AP) ? Known as the "Helicopter King of China," Shenzong Cheng has been quietly building a small empire in aviation manufacturing. Now, the Chinese industrialist is making an ambitious play to acquire Kansas aircraft-maker Hawker Beechcraft's civilian aircraft operations.

As details of the $1.79 billion deal with Beijing-based Superior Aviation Beijing Co. Ltd. begin to emerge in bankruptcy filings, so too does the dizzying maze of companies leading back to Cheng in Beijing. Superior is 60 percent owned by Beijing Superior Aviation Technology Corp. Ltd. ? a private entity entirely owned by Cheng and his wife, Qin Wang, according to a letter outlining the proposal.

Hawker Beechcraft, which filed for bankruptcy protection in May, said it was premature to comment on Cheng's role in the acquisition.

Superior CEO Tim Archer told The Associated Press in a written statement Thursday that Superior Aviation looks forward to a strategic partnership with Hawker Beechcraft's civilian aircraft division. He said Superior intends to strengthen Hawker Beechcraft's position as a global leader by "re-igniting" its research and development programs.

"We will aggressively work to keep jobs in the United States by continued production of the Hawker and Beechcraft product lines and expanding the production, design, and servicing of civilian aircraft at all locations including Kansas, Arkansas and Texas, and many other states across America," Archer wrote.

An assistant for Cheng in China, Qian Chunyuan, said that Cheng was too busy to give interviews.

In a report published this week in a Chinese newspaper, 21st Century Business Herald, Qian was quoted saying Hawker Beechcraft is "a company whose brand value is very high, with many bidders." He also told the newspaper that Cheng is pursuing another potential acquisition, an Australian aircraft distributor, which would be used to sell the company's products.

Cheng is chairman of Qingdao Haili Helicopter Co. Ltd., a helicopter manufacturer in the eastern coastal city of Qingdao that makes B-2B light helicopters as well as unmanned helicopters. The newspaper Oriental Morning Post in Shanghai reported Qingdao Haili has suspended helicopter production due to poor export orders.

Cheng also is chairman of Weifang Tianxiang Aviation Technology Co. Ltd. In 2009, Weifang Tianxiang and an American helicopter manufacturer, Brantly International Ltd., of Coppell, Texas, set up a joint venture, Weifang Tianxiang Aerospace Industry Co. Ltd., and received approval to invest $20 million to set up a production line, according to the website of the Commerce Department of Shandong province, where Qingdao is located.

The engineering and administrative offices of Brantly International were relocated to Superior's facilities in Coppell, Texas, where their operations have apparently merged. Brantly, which once built the B-2B helicopters at its Texas plant, says all its manufacturing is done at its parent facility in Qingdao, China. Today, the company's parts and service department remains in business, but its website says no new helicopters are currently available for sale.

The Brantly Group paid $7 million in 2009 to acquire U.S. aircraft parts supplier Superior Air Parts Co., which at the time was in bankruptcy proceedings, according to court filings.

In a letter sent to Hawker Beechcraft outlining Superior's proposal to acquire the Kansas plane-maker, Cheng touted his company's experience in the United States.

"Superior has acquired an aviation business in the U.S. in 2009 out of bankruptcy and has turned the target into a profitable business within less than two ... years under the ownership of Superior, so the management of Superior is very familiar with the bankruptcy acquisition process and acquiring and managing an aviation business in the U.S.," Cheng wrote.

Hawker Beechcraft employs about 7,400 people, with roughly 4,700 working at its Wichita, Kan., facility. It also has factories in Little Rock, Ark., the U.K. and Mexico, as well as more than 100 service centers worldwide.

Analysts say it is unlikely Superior would move Hawker Beechcraft's entire aircraft production lines to China because doing so would mean the loss of its FAA production certificate, although some work could be farmed out.

In his letter to Hawker Beechcraft, Cheng wrote that Superior had no plans to relocate or terminate any manufacturing facilities or product lines. But Cheng also noted that Superior has worked closely with the Beijing municipal government to build a strong aviation industry in Beijing.

The remaining 40 percent ownership interest in Superior is held by Beijing E-Town International Investment & Development Corp. Ltd., an investment company controlled by the Beijing municipal government. E-Town owns stakes in 23 foreign investment projects with total assets of $1 billion, according to information publicized by the company in advertising for job applicants.

E-Town was set up in 2009 by the Beijing city government's Economic and Technology Development Committee.

It is intended to support development in the Yizhuang district on the southern edge of the Chinese capital.

Visa, MasterCard, banks in $7.25 billion retail settlement

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Visa Inc, MasterCard Inc and banks that issue their credit cards have agreed to a $7.25 billion settlement with U.S. retailers in a lawsuit over the fixing of credit and debit card fees in what could be the largest antitrust settlement in U.S. history.

The settlement, if approved by a judge, would resolve dozens of lawsuits filed by retailers in 2005. The card companies and banks would also allow stores to start charging customers extra for using certain credit cards in an effort to steer them toward cheaper forms of payment.

The settlement papers were filed on Friday in Brooklyn federal court.

Swipe fees - charges to cover processing credit and debit payments - are set by the card companies and deducted from the transaction by the banks that issue the cards, essentially passing on the cost to merchants, the lawsuits said.

The proposed settlement involves a payment to a class of stores of $6 billion from Visa, MasterCard and more than a dozen of the country's largest banks who issue the companies' cards. The card companies have also agreed to reduce swipe fees by the equivalent of 10 basis points for eight months for a total consideration to stores valued at about $1.2 billion, according to lawyers for the plaintiffs.

The deal calls for merchants to be allowed to negotiate collectively over the swipe fees, also known as interchange fees.

Merchants would also be required to disclose information about card fees to customers, and credit card surcharges would be subject to a cap, according to the settlement papers. Surcharge rules would not affect the 10 states that currently prohibit that practice, which include California, New York and Texas.

An additional $525 million will be paid to stores suing individually, according to the documents.

"This is an historic settlement," said Bonny Sweeney, a lawyer for the plaintiffs. The settlement "will help shift the competitive balance from one formerly dominated by the banks which controlled the card networks to the side of merchants and consumers," said Craig Wildfang, who also represented the plaintiffs.

Noah Hanft, general counsel for MasterCard, said the company believed its interests were "best served by an amicable resolution" of the case. Visa Chief Executive Officer Joseph Saunders said the settlement was in the best interest of all parties and did not expect the settlement to impact its current guidance.

Not everyone was pleased with the proposed settlement, however. One class plaintiff, the National Association of Convenience Stores, rejected the settlement in a statement on Friday from its president, Tom Robinson, who is also president of Robinson Oil Corp.

"Not only does the proposed settlement fail to introduce competition and transparency, it actually provides Visa and MasterCard with the tools to continue to shield swipe fees from market forces," Robinson said.

The proposed considerations are a far cry from the $50 billion in swipe-fees paid each year by U.S. retailers, he said.

The American Bankers Association, a trade group whose members include the bank defendants, said retailers, not consumers, stood to gain the most from the proposed settlement.

"Big-box retailers will likely seize this opportunity to ask Congress for even more handouts," said ABA President Frank Keating in a statement, referring to the Durbin amendment passed by Congress in 2010 limiting debit-card swipe fees - a move that banks say resulted in an $8 billion windfall for retailers.

"The legal process worked and should send a signal to Congress that it is wrong to pick winners and losers in a complex dispute between two industries," the Electronic Payment Coalition, which represents payment networks, said in a statement.

The plaintiffs charged that Visa and MasterCard colluded directly and indirectly through the issuing banks to keep merchants from finding ways to mitigate credit-card costs.

Plaintiffs in the case include supermarket chain Kroger Co, pharmacy chain Rite-Aid Corp and shoe retailer Payless ShoeSource, as well as trade associations such as the National Association of Convenience Stores, National Grocers Association and the American Booksellers Association.

The National Retail Federation, a trade group representing retailers, said that "the test will be whether the injunctive relief is meaningful. Unless it is, the card market will stay broken and neither merchants nor their customers will achieve a long-term benefit."

A number of banks that issue Visa and MasterCard cards, including JP Morgan Chase & Co, were also named as defendants in the lawsuit, along with Visa and MasterCard's payment networks.

A spokeswoman for Bank of America NA said it believed the terms of the settlement were fair. JP Morgan declined to comment. Citigroup Inc acknowledged its role in the deal and declined further comment.

A spokesman for Wells Fargo said the company was pleased to put the matter behind it.

An estimated 7 million retailers will be affected by the settlement, according to lawyers for the plaintiffs.

Visa and MasterCard have been plagued by legal problems over their payment-card policies for the last decade. In 2003, the companies paid a combined $3 billion to settle a lawsuit by stores over their "honor all cards" policies, which tied acceptance of credit to debit cards.

The U.S. Department of Justice brought and settled a civil antitrust suit against Visa and MasterCard in 2010. As part of the consent decree, the companies agreed to drop certain policies that kept stores from steering their customers to cheaper forms of payment.

But the decree left intact policies that prohibit stores from charging customers more when they use certain payment cards, according to a July 2011 court filing from plaintiffs.

The defendants denied that any collusion took place.

Visa said its share of the settlement is $4.4 billion, and Mastercard said its share is $790 million.

In December, Visa announced it set aside an additional $1.57 billion to cover the cost of a potential settlement in the case, bringing its litigation reserve balance to $4.28 billion, according to a regulatory filing. MasterCard in the fourth quarter of 2011 recorded a $770 million pretax charge, as an estimate of its potential liability in the case, a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission showed.

MasterCard said in a statement that it expected to incur an additional $20 million pre-tax charge in its 2012 second quarter financial statements to cover its portion of the settlement.

Visa and MasterCard together accounted for more than 80 percent of U.S. credit and debit card purchases by volume in 2011, according to data from the Nilson Report, a California trade publication.

Albert Foer, president of think-tank the American Antitrust Institute, said that the settlement should create more transparency for consumers at the cash register. Because merchants had been forbidden from charging customers extra for costlier payment forms, they often built that cost into the retail price, he said.

While it may not lead to lower prices, "it gives the consumers some choice and it should ultimately mean a better deal for everybody," Foer said. "In the longer run, it should help keep retail prices under better control."

It may also be the last time retailers are allowed to take Visa and Mastercard to court over interchange fees. The proposal provides for extensive litigation releases that would keep stores that join the settlement from suing over a wide range of issues relating to fees and anti-steering restraints.

The case is In re: Payment Card Interchange Fee and Merchant Discount Antitrust Litigation, in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York, no. 05-1720.

It was vice president's day on the campaign trail.

Mitt Romney made a pilgrimage to former Vice President Dick Cheney's Wyoming home to raise cash.

It was the latest in a series of big-ticket fundraisers that have allowed the Republican challenger to blow past President Barack Obama in soliciting contributions over the past two months.

Vice President Joe Biden, meanwhile, addressed the NAACP annual convention in Houston, a day after Romney spoke and drew several outbursts of boos.

There were no boos for Biden. Noting that he was a "lifetime member" of the nation's premier civil rights group, Biden said, "It's good to be home."

"I think Mitt Romney is a fine family man, driven by what he believes, but the differences are so basic about how we view the future of America," Biden said.

Obama himself addressed the NAACP in a taped video message, saying "I stand on your shoulders" in seeking a second term.

Perhaps while at Cheney's place, Romney will also seek some private advice on picking his own running mate. Cheney, after all, headed former President George W. Bush's vice presidential search.

Then again, maybe Romney won't. We know how Cheney's search turned out. He got the job himself.

Romney is keeping his selection process tightly under wraps. An announcement could come at any point up to the GOP convention in late August.

Cheney, who had a heart transplant in March, is still lionized by conservatives, but reviled by Democrats and viewed unfavorably by many independents.

Romney has walked a fine line so far, not mentioning either Bush or Cheney by name while welcoming their support. Obama, meanwhile, keeps telling audiences a Romney victory would mean a return to failed Bush-Cheney policies.

Obama campaigns the next two days in Virginia, a top battleground he won in 2008.

Political situation poses no immediate risk to country's credit rating ...

The Fitch Ratings agency informs that political instability in Romania does not represent an immediate risk for the country?s credit rating, however it could move to the forefront if it affects fiscal consolidation, delays structural reforms or becomes permanent. Fitch gives Romania a BBB- rating with a stable outlook. According to the agency, the main risks for Romania?s rating consist of structural deficiencies and exposure to the crisis in Greece and the Euro Area. The country?s financial situation benefits from fiscal consolidation and substantial buffer-reserves against external vulnerabilities.?Thus, the main reason of concern for Fitch would be a delay in structural reforms that are part of Romania?s agreement with the IMF and the European Commission, including the privatization of state-owned companies, a domain that already has problems following the failure to sell Cupru Min Abrud and Hidroelectrica?s move to file for insolvency. Thus, the main scenario the agency is staking on is that the general deficit will drop as a percentage of GDP in the following two years, however it will do so at a slower rhythm than the one officially forecast, against the backdrop of a rise in social expenditures.

It turns out, despite having the economic downswing, demand jointly with rent costs in these locations have grown to about 5 percent over the previous year, rendering most investors from different states with their most beneficial steady earnings.

If you're troubled about having to fund your investment with your own cash, here's a certain amount of good news: You don't need to utilize all your own cash. There are other existing solutions to your funding demands. Finally, depending on your financial circumstances and what you are comfortable with, these may include equity sharing with members of the family or organizations that have the available capital, private money loan (perfect for agents who give outstanding good deals for cash payment), private mortgage, and other financing strategies.

RolePlayGateway?

NOTE: Before I begin, I'd like to say that this report is entirely factual. I took the information from mainly wiki, but I also did a lot more research into the samurai, and I think that I have a better grasp on them now. That being said, enjoy!

The samurai has been a popular icon in Japan since the Heian era (500 A. D. ? 1200 A. D.) In western culture, the samurai has been a pop culture icon since WWII, when the Japanese acted under a more violent type of bushido, or ?the way of the warrior? however, the position of the samurai isn?t given much thought on today. In fact, before writing this report, my knowledge of the samurai must?ve been about the same as yours. Now, I shall share with you my knowledge of the samurai, including their history, role in society, and influence on culture today.

When you want to look at the history of the samurai, you must also look at the history of Japan. It is unavoidable. From the time emperor Jimmu came into power in 600 B. C. there have been stories of the samurai. Though, the term ?samurai? didn?t come to be until he set up the ?buke? class, there have been stories about samurai- like figures since before the empire was established.

For example; there is a story that, before Jimmu came to rule Japan, he was attacked by eighty ?braves? (bandits). He responded to this by bestowing a banquet upon them. Then, Jimmu had eighty butlers, each with a sword, wait on them. Soon, Jimmu gave the signal by singing, and the butlers slew the braves. One would assume that the eighty butlers were then put into the buke, or ?warrior?, class, so this story has a seemingly small connection to the samurai. There are other stories pertaining to the beginnings of the samurai, but I thought this one was most interesting.

Stories told later in the Heian era are much more fantastical than they are today. Some involve young samurais wrestling deities, some involve them killing their brothers, some involve a fieldtrip to the underworld? they?re very versatile. However, all the samurai in these stories shared one trait; all died a hero?s death. In Japan, it was considered heroic and honorable to die for the imperial family.

The samurai?s claim to fame in real life was beating back the Mongol invasion, twice. Though the samurai were outnumbered, outmanned, and out of reasons to fight back, they still won. A normal person would wonder how, and a not-so-normal person would tell them ?it?s because of the divine winds!? or Kamikaze if you prefer. The Kamikaze were two typhoons that took place during the Japanese-Mongol war in the late Heian era. Though the war was in summer, when typhoons are most common, it was passed off as divine intervention.

Still, throughout the age of the samurai, they remained powerful, respected figures. The term ?samurai? literally means ?one who serves? and is a gender-specific term. Samurai often had shoguns or daimyos as their masters. Once a samurai lost his or her master, said samurai became a ronin and, more often than not, started living a life of crime.

Perhaps the most famous samurai was named Miyamoto Musashi, though it is not a household name, he is well known among samurai fanatics like me. Miyamoto is what most of us think when the word samurai is mentioned. His primary weapon was a sword, he even had some involvement in poetry. Miyamoto was also the author of the ?Book of Five Rings?, a reference to the samurai approach to business used by Wall Street people.

Not all samurai were comrades in arms, though. Whenever Japan split due to civil unrest, both sides retained their famous samurai. In the battle of Sekigahara, for example, two clans kept in line by Hideyoshi each controlled a separate part of Japan. Sekigahara was widely considered to be the unofficial beginning of the Tokugawa bakufu; the last shogunate to control Japan.

Regardless of the split, the samurai kept their beliefs, such as bushido. Bushido, literally translated as ?way of the warrior?, was a code of honor used in the buke class. Bushido was like a samurai?s manual for how to behave, and had rules such as a samurai who dishonors himself must commit seppuku.

On that note, seppuku was a tamer form of hari-kari, or disembowelment of oneself. The steps of seppuku include; stabbing yourself in the upper right corner of your stomach, slicing a diagonal line down to the lower left corner, slicing to the upper left, slicing to the lower right, and finally back to the upper right. If that doesn?t kill you, you stab yourself in the neck. In case of hesitation or dying too early in the process, a friend is often expected to be near you while you prepare to stab yourself.

As you can tell, samurai had to have been skilled in all kinds of weapons to survive. It is a common misconception that the main weapon of the samurai had always been the sword. This may not be too far from the truth when addressing samurai on foot, but mounted samurai held the bow and arrow in higher regard. No matter if the samurai were mounted or on foot, most had skill in using a wakazaki, a two- handed long sword, a tanto, a small dagger used as a last resort, a katana, a steel short sword, and a bow.

Women at the time also had the privilege of becoming akin to samurai. The most common way for a woman to get into the buke class was to marry a samurai. That being said, most women in the class did have some skill in martial arts, these women were called onna bugi-sha. Some of these women fought in wars, earning them the title of ?female warrior?

Today, the culture of the samurai has an impact on life. For example, martial arts classes that involve use of weapons often use bamboo katanas as their primary examples. One of these classes, known as kendo, even utilizes the fighting style of the samurai. Some of these classes show how to use staff- like weapons. A cornered samurai with nothing else on hand may have used something like that if it were nearby.

In WWII, the samurai was first introduced into western culture when Japan entered the Axis Powers with Italy and Germany. The Japanese acted on a form of bushido that would make most famous samurai cringe. With every battle they lost, Japanese soldiers either got into a fight they couldn?t win, or committed seppuku. When the Japanese won a battle, the prisoners of war were forced into labor on a bridge in Edo, or Tokyo as we know it today, most died during the project.

Somehow, though, the idea of the samurai stuck with us and became a respected figure in western media. Cartoons such as ?Samurai Jack? portrayed the samurai as rigorous sword- wielding superhumans. Others like ?Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles? had the samurai play the bad guy, like they did in WWII. Some even touch upon the ?female samurai?, such as the Mulan series.

The samurai was also put to extremes in eastern culture too. In anime, samurai come in all shades of noble, annoying, respected, and shy. Looking to a historically accurate anime, Boku no Genji depicts Sekigahara in grater detail than I have here, and Axis Powers; Hetalia has Japan fight much like a samurai. The less historic Bamboo Blade makes bushido a little more lighthearted and good humored in its cast of female kendo students. In addition to these animes, the manga Usagi tells the tale of a rabbit, who also happens to be exactly what comes to mind when we think ?samurai?. Even in an anime loosely based on Shakespeare, the heroine Juliet?s vigilante alter- ego acts on bushido.

In video games, the samurai is more or less portrayed with historical accuracy. In Total War, the samurai appear exactly as they do in real life. In Romance of The Three Kingdoms, the characters show more traits of samurai than Chinese soldiers. In visual novels, the samurai characters may be plucked from history, but things are always more fantastical.

In conclusion, the samurai has much more to it than western culture tells us today. Samurai were respectable, formidable, and somewhat elegant figures who acted in honor. They lived to serve and often died for honor. I hope that reading my report has been an eye- opening experience.

Giant ice telescope hunts for dark matter's space secrets

MELBOURNE | Tue Jul 10, 2012 10:19am EDT

MELBOURNE (Reuters) - Scientists are using the world's biggest telescope, buried deep under the South Pole, to try to unravel the mysteries of tiny particles known as neutrinos, hoping to shed light on how the universe was made.

The mega-detector, called IceCube, took 10 years to build 2,400 meters below the Antarctic ice. At one cubic km, it is bigger than the Empire State building, the Chicago Sears Tower - now known as Willis Tower - and Shanghai's World Financial Center combined.

Designed to observe neutrinos, which are emitted by exploding stars and move close to the speed of light, the telescope is attracting new attention in the wake of last week's discovery of a particle that appears to be the Higgs boson - a basic building block of the universe.

"You hold up your finger and a hundred billion neutrinos pass through it every second from the sun," said Jenni Adams, a physicist at the University of Canterbury in New Zealand, who works on IceCube.

IceCube is essentially a string of light detectors buried in the ice through hot water drilling. When neutrinos, which are everywhere, interact in the ice, they produce charged particles that then create light, which can be detected.

The ice acts as a net that isolates the neutrinos, making them easier to observe. It also protects the telescope from potentially damaging radiation.

"If a supernova goes off in our galaxy now, we can detect hundreds of neutrinos with IceCube," Adams told reporters at the International Conference on High Energy Physics in Melbourne.

"We won't be able to see them individually, but the whole detector will just light up like a massive fireworks display."

Scientists are attempting to track the particles to discover their points of origin, in the hope that will give clues on what happens in space, particularly in unseen parts of the universe known as dark matter.

Before IceCube was completed in 2010, scientists had observed just 14 neutrinos. With the huge new instrument, paired with another telescope in the Mediterranean, hundreds of neutrinos have been detected.

So far, all of those have been created in the earth's atmosphere, but IceCube scientists hope to eventually detect those from space.

Why the wedding ring matters | Your Amazing Marriage

Last week, I commented to a coworker that his lunch smelled good. I asked him what he was warming up in the microwave.

He broke into a mile-wide grin and said, "Would you believe my wife has made me lunch every day?"

Knowing he was a newlywed, I laughed and congratulated him, and told him that was great to hear.

Troy and Angela (not their real names) got married on Easter Sunday of this year. They have been a couple for the past seven years and have been cohabitating for the past six, and just got married within the past two months.

I asked Troy what else has changed in the few months since his wedding and he said, "Almost everything. It's really weird. Things are calmer around the house, we're not on edge and everything is going really, really well."

I asked Troy if anything else significant has happened between them, other than changing her last name. He laughed and said no, that was all. He said he can't really understand the difference, but he likes it.

I took this opportunity to explain to Troy that I knew what the difference-maker was. I told him the ring really does matter, and more than that, it's the commitment.

Even though they were living together for the past six years and built a relationship, they always had "an out." As long as they were only living together and not married, they didn't have the same level of commitment that they now share.

When things get tough ? and things get tough in every relationship ? it's easier to toss in the towel and break up without the ring and the commitment of marriage.

I told Troy that the commitment he made to her when they got married means more to Angela than he can imagine. Most women want commitment and security, and when they don't have those, they are unsettled.

Troy listened intently as I described what Angela was feeling and he soaked it up like a sponge.

He nodded in agreement when I explained that they could no longer "tap out" when things got tough and that the commitment they now shared was not only binding legally, but also in the sight of God and their witnesses. They had friends and family to hold them accountable to one another.

You see, commitment will get you through when the storms of life are pounding away at your anchor. They will allow you to stand firm, without wavering in your convictions.

Without having a predetermined resolve that you will stick by your spouse when life gets tough, thoughts of doubt and despair may creep in and begin to take hold in your heart.

The ring is a reminder of that commitment.

It is no secret or surprise that bad things happen in life. Sickness, job loss, disappointment, financial setbacks and countless other challenges appear in our path.

Challenges and problems cannot be avoided and oftentimes cannot be controlled, much less result in a preferred outcome. What you can control, however, when you face these trials and tribulations, is your response to them.

How will you handle these setbacks? Who will you turn to for comfort, and who will you turn to for solutions? Will you play the blame game and try to find fault in others? Or will you accept the fact that bad things do happen to good people, then work together to find a way out of the mess you are in?

The answer lies in your resolve and commitment to each other. It is easy to fall victim to your circumstances and to find fault in your spouse for your current or ongoing problems. Resolve and total commitment to each other is paramount in determining the success in your relationship.

We encourage couples to commit to love their spouse, regardless of the circumstances that come their way, and to learn from every setback and failure.

I applaud Troy and Angela for taking the bold step at this point in their relationship and making the commitment of marriage. He has clearly witnessed a positive change in the atmosphere at home and in the way he and Angela communicate.

And, to top it all off, now he gets home cooked leftovers for lunch every day.

Life is good! Way to go, Troy.
