Will Hollywood still shower the love on Obama?

(AP) ? Hollywood, as everyone knows, loves the Next Big Thing. And four years ago, Barack Obama was certainly that: a political supernova, the equivalent of a breakout movie star.

"He is 'The One,'" declared Oprah Winfrey, his biggest and most influential celebrity champion. "The best candidate I've ever seen," pronounced George Clooney. Halle Berry said she'd "collect paper cups off the ground to make his pathway clear." Black Eyed Peas frontman will.i.am chimed in with the famous "Yes We Can" video. And so on.

But you can't be the Next Big Thing twice. And so, with the 2012 vote less than a year away, there's clearly a different mood in heavily Democratic Hollywood: less gushing, not to mention snippets of criticism, most prominently from actor Matt Damon, who campaigned for Obama last time but now makes no secret of his disillusionment.

"I think he misinterpreted his mandate," Damon said earlier this year, and then recently told Elle magazine the country would have been better off with a one-term president with guts (he used a much saltier word).

But while the adulation of the 2008 election may be significantly muted among Hollywood liberals, as with liberals elsewhere, Obama supporters say that's only natural, given the circumstances. Fundraisers there say that events have been selling out and there's plenty of enthusiasm.

Most importantly, they add, the nation's attention has been on the battling Republicans. Soon, the choice will get starker and the Democratic base will be energized, they argue.

"The moment the Republicans have their nominee is when you're going to see anyone still on the fence jump in," says Chad Griffin, a Los Angeles-based communications strategist and Democratic fundraiser. "Once you have a head-to-head matchup, the contrast will be grand."

Numbers compiled by the nonpartisan Center for Responsive Politics show that while overall political contributions were up in Hollywood for the first three quarters of this year compared with the same period four years ago, contributions to Democrats were slightly down.

According to the group, the movie, television and recording industries ? a large chunk of which is Hollywood ? gave $17,639,267 in the first three quarters to federal candidates and parties, with 71 percent going to the Democrats and 29 percent to Republicans, as opposed to $15,642,561 four years ago, when 77 percent went to the Democrats and 23 percent to Republicans.

But numbers for the Democrats were down by more than $2.5 million from four years ago ? $9,249,303 this year compared with $11,966,077 four years ago.

Obama's fundraisers note that four years ago, Obama was locked in a tense primary battle with Hillary Rodham Clinton ? and primaries drive early fundraising.

"A re-election is always different," says Andy Spahn, a longtime political adviser to one of the top Democratic fundraisers in the nation, DreamWorks co-founder Jeffrey Katzenberg, along with his partners Steven Spielberg and David Geffen.

He calls the current mood among Hollywood Democrats a "matured enthusiasm," but says support is strong.

Though Damon's remarks about the president have been the most pointed, other celebrities have expressed disappointment, or at least mild disillusionment.

"I love the president like most of us," Sean "Diddy" Combs told Source magazine this year. "I just want the president to do better."

And will.i.am, creator of that viral video that ended with the word "HOPE," told The New York Times earlier this year: "I don't want to hope anymore." Asked if he was disappointed in Obama, he said: "I don't feel disappointed. I feel like, Argggh! Speak louder! I feel like, Do something!"

What about core Obama celebrity supporters Clooney and Winfrey? Far from being disillusioned with Obama, Clooney said recently: "I'm disillusioned by the people who are disillusioned by Obama."

"Democrats eat their own," the actor said. "I'm a firm believer in sticking by and sticking up for the people whom you've elected." He went on to list the accomplishments of the Obama administration, wondering why Democrats weren't selling them better.

And Winfrey, credited with helping Obama win over many women in 2008, told Politico in August: "I'm in his corner for whatever he needs me to do."

There already have been plenty of celebrities hosting or showing up at Obama fundraising events. Actress Eva Longoria hosted one at the home of Melanie Griffith and Antonio Banderas. Lady Gaga attended a September fundraiser at the home of Facebook's chief operating officer, Sheryl Sandberg. Alicia Keys performed at a New York fundraiser.

And in the summer, film executive Harvey Weinstein held a Manhattan event sprinkled with celebs including Keys, Jimmy Fallon, and Gwyneth Paltrow and husband Chris Martin. A 50th birthday-themed fundraiser in Chicago featured performances by Jennifer Hudson, Herbie Hancock and the band OK Go.

Of course, celebrity support isn't always a win-win for a candidate. Just as Obama's opponents in 2008 tried to use his taste for arugula to paint him as elitist, they tried to use his celebrity connections to imply he was lightweight, all pizazz and no substance ? most pointedly in an ad tenuously linking him to Paris Hilton and Britney Spears.

The tactic seemed to scare Obama's campaign enough to downplay the role of celebrities at the Democratic convention that summer. Will the campaign similarly seek to downplay the celebrity role this time?

"Celebrities are helpful in terms of exciting a base," says Griffin, the fundraiser. "I don't think the president will have any shortage of surrogates."

One thing is clear: They won't include Damon, and the president wasn't shy about making a few jokes at the actor's expense back in May, at the White House Correspondents' Association dinner.

"Matt Damon said he was disappointed in my performance," the president noted. Then he referred to one of Damon's recent films. "Well, Matt, I just saw 'The Adjustment Bureau,' so right back atcha, buddy."

Damon, whose representatives did not respond to a request for comment, has given no sign that he plans to do anything as dramatic as switch sides in November. The real danger, say some Obama supporters, is that comments like his would lead voters ? especially key younger ones ? to stay home.

That's a threat the president faces in places well beyond Hollywood.

Ken Sunshine, a prominent public relations consultant who has represented top entertainers and politicians, thinks that ultimately "the activist community in entertainment and everywhere else will come home and support the president's re-election with the same degree of enthusiasm as before ? if for no other reason than ... consider the alternative!"

"But once we help him get re-elected," Sunshine adds, "then we really hold his feet to the fire in the second term."

European Shares Halt Rally as Debt Fears Resurface

European stocks dipped in thin holiday trade on Wednesday, halting their year-end rally, hurt by fresh worries over the eurozone debt crisis and Iran's threat to stop the flow of oil through the Strait of Hormuz.

At 9:15 a.m. (British time), the FTSEurofirst 300 FTEU3 index of top European shares was down 0.05 percent at 989.90 points in anaemic volumes.

The eurozone's blue chip Euro STOXX 50 STOXX50E index was down 0.1 percent at 2,287.50 points, testing a key support level, its 50-day moving average.

Heavyweight mining stocks featured among the top losers, with Rio Tinto (RIO.L) down 0.8 percent, while oil producers also lost ground, with BP (BP.L) down 1.2 percent and Total (TOTF.PA) down 0.4 percent, hit by fears of output disruption.

Iran's first vice-president warned that the flow of oil through the Strait of Hormuz would be stopped if foreign sanctions were imposed on Iran's crude exports over its nuclear ambitions.

Like us on Facebook

Banking stocks also retreated, with Credit Agricole (CAGR.PA) down 1.9 percent and UniCredit (CRDI.MI) down 0.7 percent.

Yields on Italy's debt gained ground on Wednesday ahead of the country's short-term debt sales and with higher-risk auctions of long-term paper due later in the week.

"Italy has been the epicentre of the debt crisis in the last part of the year. The faith of this equity rally will depend on the results of Italy's raft of debt auctions this week and in the first quarter. All eyes are on the Italian yields," a Paris-based trader said.

The country plans to sell up to 11.5 billion euros (9.6 billion pounds) of short term bills and zero coupon bonds on Wednesday, with demand from domestic banks expected to provide a smooth auction, albeit at a high cost.

The country will face a more difficult task of selling long-term debt on Thursday when there will be a greater reliance on international investors to buy 8.5 billion euros of debt with maturities of up to 10 years.

Despite the recent massive liquidity injection by the European Central Bank, banks still appear to distrust each other and prefer to deposit their money at the ECB's overnight facility than lend to each other.

Latest figures show banks deposited 452 billion euros at the central bank. Emergency overnight borrowing also remained high at above 6 billion euros.

"This really highlights the reluctance banks have to lend to each other and they would rather take a small loss than go to the inter-bank market," IG Markets dealer Chris Weston said.

(AP Photo/Henny Ray Abrams)

(AP) ? Muslim leaders intent on showing Mayor Michael Bloomberg that they have no appetite for his support of the police department's efforts to gather intelligence on their neighborhoods are poised to make an impression by their absence at his annual interfaith breakfast Friday.

A letter they composed made a controversy out of a normally sedate end-of-the-year meeting. In all, 15 Muslim clerics and community figures say they won't show up to protest the surveillance program first revealed in a series of Associated Press articles.

But one man who signed the letter, Rabbi Michael Weisser, said he will attend the breakfast after friends in the Muslim community urged him to attend and engage the mayor in conversation about the dispute.

The breakfast is traditionally held at the historic New York Public Library building on 42nd Street and has long served to showcase the city's diversity during overlapping winter holidays.

Weisser, who is one of seven people who will give invocations at the gathering, said he will not address it in his remarks to the group because he had already submitted his text to the mayor's office before taking sides in the dispute. Still, he said he saw parallels to what Jews have faced.

"From a Jewish perspective, it reminded me of things that were going on in the 1930s in Germany. We don't need that in America," he said. "The Muslim community is targeted. It's stereotyped. When people think of terrorism, they immediately think Muslim."

He said he had no problem with the police department following leads, but objected to the sense that the department is targeting Muslim organizations because they are Muslim.

"We can't be painting a whole group of people with the same broad brush," he said.

Bloomberg's office has said it expects about two dozen Muslim leaders to attend the breakfast.

"You're going to see a big turnout tomorrow, and it's nice that all faiths can get together," the mayor said Thursday. Boycott participants "are going to miss a chance to have a great breakfast."

Among those disagreeing with the boycott is Imam Shamsi Ali of the Islamic Cultural Center of New York. "I believe that engagement is more important. I think everyone disagrees with the way the NYPD is penetrating the community, but I think generalizing everything else as bad is not appropriate," he said. "The mayor's not perfect, but there are many things about him we need to appreciate. And I think working with him is a way of appreciation."

Bloomberg and Police Commissioner Ray Kelly have insisted their counterterrorism programs are legal.

"Contrary to assertions, the NYPD lawfully follows leads in terrorist-related investigations and does not engage in the kind of wholesale spying on communities that was falsely alleged," police spokesman Paul Browne said in an email Thursday.

Imam Al-Hajj Talib Abdur-Rashid, president of the Islamic Leadership Council of New York, a group of 35 clerics and their congregations, said those who won't attend don't feel comfortable "going to have coffee and doughnuts with the mayor knowing that this civil liberties crisis that's affecting all New Yorkers is not going to be addressed."

He and other Muslim activists and clerics sent a letter to Bloomberg this week turning down their invitations. About three dozen other people signed the letter as supporters, including rabbis, a Roman Catholic nun, Protestant pastors and a Quaker, though it was unclear how many had been invited to the breakfast.

"I couldn't be there while knowing that the mayor supports, if not established, this warrantless spying apparatus," said Hesham El-Meligy, founder of the Building Bridges Coalition of Staten Island.

Activists accused Bloomberg of squandering the goodwill built up last year when he fiercely defended a proposed Islamic prayer and cultural center not far from where the World Trade Center stood. The mosque is still in the planning stages.

Bloomberg had also won praise from Muslim leaders for criticizing anti-Islamic rhetoric and offering words of compassion after fires in the Bronx killed a large Muslim family and destroyed a mosque.

"However, despite these welcome and positive actions, very disturbing revelations have come to light regarding the city's treatment of Muslim New Yorkers," the letter said.

Records examined by the AP show the police department collected information on people who were neither accused nor suspected of wrongdoing.

The AP series detailed police department efforts to infiltrate Muslim neighborhoods and mosques with aggressive programs designed by a CIA officer. Documents reviewed by the AP revealed that undercover police officers known as "rakers" visited businesses such as Islamic bookstores and cafes, chatting up store owners to determine their ethnicities and gauge their views. They also played cricket and eavesdropped in ethnic clubs.

The surveillance efforts have been credited with enabling police to thwart a 2004 plot to bomb the Herald Square subway station.

Critics said the efforts amount to ethnic profiling and violate court guidelines that limit how and why police can collect intelligence before there is evidence of a crime. They have asked a judge to issue a restraining order against the police.

Participants in the boycott said they feel betrayed by the city.

"Civic engagement is a two-way street. We've done our part as a community; we're waiting for the city to do their part," said Linda Sarsour, executive director of the Arab-American Association of New York.

The surveillance has revealed deep divisions in the city a decade after 9/11. Many New Yorkers say they empathize with Muslims living under the pall of suspicion, but also support aggressive police efforts against would-be terrorists.

The New York Daily News and New York Post defended the police in editorials this week, with the Daily News calling the AP's reporting "overheated, overhyped."

The AP's senior managing editor, Michael Oreskes, sent a letter to the newspaper Thursday in defense of the news organization.

"These were stories about where our city was drawing the line in protecting New Yorkers from another 9/11 attack," Oreskes wrote. "The stories were based on extensive reporting and documents. It is a journalist's job to report the activities of government. It is up to citizens to decide about those activities."

How the iPad has changed the world

The iPad Has Both Changed and Revitalized Reading One area that iPad has made a large impact is reading. Sure the e-Book readers have also had an impact but not in the way that the iPad has. The iPad has done this is by being a platform for brilliant app developers. The apps developed for the iPad have made reading on an electronic device fun. Analysis: Caution mutes US response to NKorea (AP)

WASHINGTON ? The Obama administration's cautious response to the death of North Korean dictator Kim Jong Il reflects unease and uncertainty about the leadership transition in the reclusive country that has confounded U.S. presidents since Harry S. Truman.

For the past 60 years, the "hermit kingdom" has vexed the United States and its allies with war, nuclear tests, missile launches, belligerence and bellicose bombast. But since he took office, President Barack Obama has had to deal with the country at perhaps its most secretive point: an unclear succession at the very top at a time of deep concern about the stability of the regime.

Thus, the administration's carefully worded public messages have underscored the administration's desire for better relations with the autocratic nation and its concern about the welfare of the North Korean people. They are also gentle reminders that Washington expects Pyongyang to follow through on denuclearization pledges and improve ties with its neighbors, particularly South Korea.

The kid gloves treatment accorded to the North's youthful new leader, Kim's twenty-something son Kim Jong Un, has attracted criticism from some who see this is a moment to make a forceful case for dramatic reform and regime change.

But without solid intelligence of the opaque transition process and fearful of misunderstandings that could lead to provocations with the notoriously erratic North, U.S. officials concluded that the best course is to say little, wait and watch.

Indeed, the administration's initial reactions to Kim's death have contained little substance at all and were couched in niceties.

"All I can say is that we're monitoring the situation closely," White House press secretary Jay Carney said on Wednesday as North Korean state media broadcast pictures of wailing mourners, apparently overcome with grief. "Kim Jong Il had designated Kim Jong Un as his official successor, and at this time we have no indication that that has changed."

Carney added: "We hope that the new North Korean leadership will take the steps necessary to support peace, prosperity and a better future for the North Korean people, including through acting on its commitments to denuclearization."

Those comments echoed words from Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton. On Monday, more than 16 hours after Kim's death was announced, she was the first senior U.S. official to comment publicly on the developments. In intentionally vague comments, she called for "a peaceful and stable transition in North Korea" and expressed hope that it would not affect "regional peace and stability."

Ironically, it was Clinton who first stirred the pot about a possible succession crisis in North Korea.

Nearly three years ago, on her first trip to Asia as secretary of state, she stunned diplomatic circles with a frank appraisal of U.S. concerns amid rampant speculation about the health of Kim Jong Il, who had suffered a stroke in 2008, and his choice of a successor.

"If there is a succession, even if it's a peaceful succession, that creates more uncertainty and it also may encourage behaviors that are even more provocative as a way to consolidate power within the society," Clinton told reporters on her way to South Korea on Feb. 20, 2009.

Her remarks on a previously taboo subject sparked great debate. In Seoul the next day, she expressed surprise at the uproar, noting that reports of Kim choosing his youngest son Kim Jung Un to succeed him had "been in the news for months."

"I don't think that it's a forbidden subject to talk about succession in the hermit kingdom," Clinton said. "In fact, it seems to me it's got to be factored into any policy review that one is undertaking. ... I think it would be irresponsible for it not to be factored into what you were thinking about."

That same month, U.S. diplomats were scrambling to collect any information they could about Kim Jong Un from South Korean, Chinese and Japanese officials and experts, according to leaked State Department cables published by WikiLeaks.

Unfortunately for the Americans, their interlocutors had sharply divided opinions, according to the cables. Some predicted the North Korean regime would collapse politically within two to three years of Kim Jong Il's death. Others foresaw a power struggle between the young and untested Kim Jong Un and rivals in the elite but differed over who would prevail. Others believed there would be little change.

One apparent area of convergence, however, was that most South Korean experts believed the challenge for the younger Kim would come after his father's death.

Thus, as North Korea's transition is under way, the lack of clarity has put U.S. policy on hold.

Before Kim's passing, the administration had been expected this week to announce the resumption in food aid to North Korea and a potential bilateral meeting on nuclear disarmament. Although the State Department said there had been brief exchange with North Korean officials in New York on Monday, both initiatives are now in flux pending the end of the North's mourning period.

The administration says it is respecting that mourning period by understanding that North Korean officials will not be available for discussions. Yet it has steadfastly refused to express any sympathy for the death of Kim, whose Stalinist regime is accused of having one of the worst, if not the worst, human rights records in the world.

While showering the late Czech democracy leader Vaclev Havel with effusive eulogies, American officials have refused to even utter the word "condolence" in relation to Kim.

"With regard to the C-word," State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said Tuesday, "I think we didn't consider it appropriate in this case."

Oil hovers below $100 amid low holiday volume

(AP) ? Oil prices hovered below $100 a barrel Tuesday in Asia amid low holiday week trading volume.

Benchmark crude for February delivery was down 13 cents at $99.55 a barrel at late afternoon Singapore time in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose 15 cents to settle at $99.68 in New York on Friday.

In London, Brent crude was up 13 cents at $108.09 a barrel on the ICE Futures exchange.

Global oil trading markets were closed Monday for the Christmas holiday.

Crude briefly popped above $100 on Friday amid growing evidence the U.S. economy is improving. Some analysts say concerns that Europe's debt crisis will trigger a recession on the continent next year will overshadow any positive news out of the U.S. this week.

"We don't expect this strength to be maintained this week given a likely shift in focus back toward the eurozone where major debt issues remain largely unresolved," energy consultant Ritterbusch and Associates said in a report.

Because many traders are on vacation this week, trading volume is sharply lower and a few trades could jolt prices.

"Volume will be thin through this abbreviated week," energy consultant and trader The Schork Group said in a report. "As such, the potential exists for some wild swings."

In other Nymex trading, heating oil rose 0.8 cent to $2.91 per gallon and gasoline futures fell 0.5 cent at $2.67 per gallon. Natural gas futures were down 3.0 cents to $3.08 per 1,000 cubic feet.

How bacteria fight flouride

Thursday, December 22, 2011

Yale researchers have uncovered the molecular tricks used by bacteria to fight the effects of fluoride, which is commonly used in toothpaste and mouthwash to combat tooth decay.

In the Dec. 22 online issue of the journal Science Express, the researchers report that sections of RNA messages called riboswitches ? which control the expression of genes ? detect the build-up of fluoride and activate the defenses of bacteria, including those that contribute to tooth decay.

"These riboswitches are detectors made specifically to see fluoride," said Ronald Breaker, the Henry Ford II Professor and chair of the Department of Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology and senior author of the study.

Fluoride in over-the-counter and prescription toothpastes is widely credited with the large reduction in dental cavities seen since these products were made available beginning in the 1950s. This effect is largely caused by fluoride bonding to the enamel of our teeth, which hardens them against the acids produced by bacteria in our mouths. However, it has been known for many decades that fluoride at high concentrations also is toxic to bacteria, causing some researchers to propose that this antibacterial activity also may help prevent cavities.

The riboswitches work to counteract fluoride's effect on bacteria. "If fluoride builds up to toxic levels in the cell, a fluoride riboswitch grabs the fluoride and then turns on genes that can overcome its effects," said Breaker.

Since both fluoride and some RNA sensor molecules are negatively charged, they should not be able to bind, he notes.

"We were stunned when we uncovered fluoride-sensing riboswitches" said Breaker. "Scientists would argue that RNA is the worst molecule to use as a sensor for fluoride, and yet we have found more than 2000 of these strange RNAs in many organisms."

By tracking fluoride riboswitches in numerous species, the research team concluded that these RNAs are ancient ? meaning many organisms have had to overcome toxic levels of fluoride throughout their history. Organisms from at least two branches of the tree of life are using fluoride riboswitches, and the proteins used to combat fluoride toxicity are present in many species from all three branches.

"Cells have had to contend with fluoride toxicity for billions of years, and so they have evolved precise sensors and defense mechanisms to do battle with this ion," said Breaker, who is also an investigator with the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. Now that these sensors and defense mechanisms are known, Breaker said, it may be possible to manipulate these mechanisms and make fluoride even more toxic to bacteria. Fluoride riboswitches and proteins common in bacteria are lacking in humans, and so these fluoride defense systems could be targeted by drugs. For example, the Yale team discovered protein channels that flush fluoride out of cells. Blocking these channels with another molecule would cause fluoride to accumulate in bacteria, making it more effective as a cavity fighter.

Fluoride is the 13th most common element in the earth's crust, and it is naturally present in high concentrations throughout the United States and elsewhere. Its use in toothpaste and its addition to city water supplies across the United States sparked a controversy 60 years ago, and the dispute continues to this day. In the United Kingdom, and in other European Union countries, fluoride is used to a much lesser extent due to fierce public opposition.

The new findings from Yale only reveal how microbes overcome fluoride toxicity. The means by which humans contend with high fluoride levels remains unknown, Breaker notes. He adds that the use of fluoride has had clear benefits for dental health and that these new findings do not indicate that fluoride is unsafe as currently used.

Hollywood Christian wins South Florida Holiday Classic; Latest Girls Basketball results (Dec. 23)

Ariah Osceola led the charge with her game-high 24 points and helped Hollywood Christian to a 65-50 win over Dwyer in the championship game of the South Florida Holiday Classic at the MLK Community Center in Hollywood on Friday night.

Osceola also had four steals and four 3-pointer for the Eagles (11-3) who handed Dwyer its first loss of the season.

?It was just our girls being disciplined, going over the gameplan we set for them and executing it,? Eagles coach Carlos Adamson said of his team?s decisive win. ?Our goal was to keep the ball out of the hands of their bigs and once we did that we used our press defense to cause some turnovers and we scored a lot in transition.?

Rickae Jinks had nine points and a team-high 11 rebounds for Hollywood Christian, while Sarah Kelton added 15 points and seven assists and Shamauria Bridges chiped in 10 points and four steals.

The Eagles kept Dwyer?s Sun Sentinel Fab Five center Kai James in check, limiting the 6-foot-5 junior to just four points.

Keyanna Harris led the Panthers (13-1) with 15 points and Kiandra Bowers scored 13.

Newfound Comet Lovejoy Makes Fiery Death Dive Through Sun (SPACE.com)

A newfound comet dived through the sun's atmosphere today (Dec. 15), blazing up and most likely flaming out as scientists around the world watched.

Comet Lovejoy plunged through the sun's corona at about 7 p.m. EST today (midnight GMT on Dec. 16), coming within 87,000 miles (140,000 kilometers) of our star's surface. Temperatures in the corona can reach 2 million degrees Fahrenheit (1.1 million degrees Celsius), so Lovejoy was most likely completely destroyed, researchers said.

Scientists eager to record and study the comet's dramatic demise trained a variety of instruments on Lovejoy as it streaked toward the sun.

"We have here an exceptionally rare opportunity to observe the complete vaporization of a relatively large comet, and we have approximately 18 instruments on five different satellites that are trying to do just that," Karl Battams, a scientist at the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, D.C., wrote on the Sungrazing Comets website today, before Lovejoy's closest solar approach.

Battams runs the website, which is devoted to comets discovered by two different spacecraft: NASA's Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory (STEREO) and the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO), which is operated jointly by NASA and the European Space Agency (ESA). [Death of a Comet: Photos of Sungrazing Comet Lovejoy]

Preparing for the end

Lovejoy has a core about 660 feet (200 meters) wide. It belongs to a class of comets known as Kreutz sungrazers, whose orbits bring them very close to the sun.

All Kreutz sungrazers are thought to be the remnants of a single giant comet that broke apart several centuries ago. They're named after the 19th-century German astronomer Heinrich Kreutz, who first showed that such comets are related.

Comets plunge into the sun on a regular basis, but they rarely give much advance notice of their suicidal intentions. That's why scientists were so excited about Lovejoy. Australian amateur astronomer Terry Lovejoy discovered the icy wanderer on Nov. 27, giving researchers plenty of time to map out their observation campaign.

And that campaign has been intense, involving five different spacecraft. In addition to SOHO and STEREO, scientists planned to use NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), Japan's Hinode satellite and ESA's Proba spacecraft to track Lovejoy's movements and demise, Battams wrote.

NASA also created a website providing updates about the comet's pass through the corona, as well as images of the event beamed down by SDO. It can be found here: http://sdo.gsfc.nasa.gov/data/lovejoy.php

For his part, Terry Lovejoy said he was happy to have made a contribution, and he marveled a bit at all the attention the comet has been getting.

"It's been tremendous," Lovejoy told SPACE.com. "Apparently it's all over Facebook, and I don't use Facebook. But there's a lot of interest. I think a lot of people like the name ? the Lovejoy name seems to strike a chord with people."

A dramatic death

Lovejoy is quite large for a sungrazing comet, and experts expected it to die an impressive death. The website Spaceweather.com, for example, predicted Lovejoy would blaze as brightly as Jupiter or Venus in the sky in its last moments.

Battams also expected a good show, saying the comet might even be visible from the ground around sunset today in the Northern Hemisphere. CAUTION: Never point binoculars or a telescope at or near the sun, and never look directly at the sun with the naked eye. Serious eye damage can result.

"I do think that it will put on a spectacular show for us and will be the brightest Kreutz-group comet that SOHO has ever observed," Battams wrote last week.

Though the early returns are just starting to come in, those forecasts appear to be on the money. Observations from various spacecraft do indeed show Lovejoy flaring up significantly as it neared our star.

Researchers will keep analyzing the images to better understand the comet's daring solar approach ? and to determine whether or not it survived its trial by fire.

Video: Deadly flu virus created in the lab

>>> back now with a story that got our attention today. scientists have created a flu virus on purpose in the lab that could potentially kill a lot of people. now a big fight is about to erupt over how much to reveal to the wider world about it. we get more tonight from our chief science correspondent robert bazell .

>> reporter: starting with the virus that causes bird flu , two scientists have created a highly contagious version in the laboratory that one calls probably one of the most dangerous viruses you can make. a government committee is deciding how much detail scientific journals should reveal. and the controversial decision is due soon. some top scientists think the entire project is wrong.

>> i think it's a bad idea for us to take a lethal virus and transform it into a trance misable one and a second bad idea to publish the results.

>> reporter: bird flu called h1n1 first jumped from chickens to humans in hong kong in 1998 and was deadly, killing about 60% of the people infected. the city stopped the outbreak by killing all chickens. since then periodic outbreaks have occurred but the virus has never been very contagious, only infecting a few people at a time. the two scientists, one in europe and the other at the university of wisconsin , genetically altereded wild bird flu so it could be easily transmitted from person to person. they used ferrets. they submitted to results to two top journals, "science" and "nature." scientists did this to see what would have to happen in nature to make a pandemic. others say it could be a cookbook for terrorists. a government panel will make the recommendations. it's not certain the journal wills follow them scary stuff.

UK insists it will help Europe's new fiscal pact (AP)

LONDON ? Britain's government insists it wants to help its European neighbors hammer out the details of a fiscal pact aimed at fixing the continent's debt crisis ? even though Prime Minister David Cameron refused to sign up to the accord.

Cameron's office said Thursday that he had called the leaders of Ireland, the Czech Republic, Denmark and Sweden this week, and plans to talk with other counterparts.

Leaders are debating whether the 26 nations expected to agree to the deal can use the European Union's institutions ? such as its Brussels-based executive, or the European Court of Justice ? which are intended to serve all 27 members of the EU bloc.

"We are seeking to engage constructively in that discussion," Cameron's spokesman Steve Field told reporters in London.

French court convicts Chirac of corruption (AP)

PARIS ? A French court found former President Jacques Chirac guilty of embezzling public funds to illegally finance the conservative party he long led, in a historic verdict Thursday with repercussions for his legacy and France's political elite.

Chirac, a savvy world diplomat and icon of France's ruling establishment for decades, will not go behind bars but was handed a two-year suspended sentence that goes on his criminal record. Anti-corruption crusaders, long frustrated by dirty dealings in the French political machine, rejoiced at the conviction.

He's the first former French head of state to face prosecution since the World War II era. But the 79-year-old former leader did not take part in the trial, after doctors determined that he suffers severe memory lapses.

The court said Thursday it had found Chirac guilty in two related cases involving fake jobs created at the RPR party, which he led during his 1977-1995 tenure as Paris mayor. He was convicted of embezzling public funds, abuse of trust, and illegal conflict of interest.

Chirac repeatedly denied wrongdoing. It took years to get him to trial because he enjoyed immunity from prosecution during his 1995-2007 presidential tenure, during which he led France into the shared euro currency and became the global champion of opposition to the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq.

The court said it took into account his age, health and status as a former head of state when determining the light sentence.

Unusually, the prosecutor had requested that Chirac and the nine other defendants in the complex two-part case be acquitted, saying not enough evidence proved intentional corruption. The court disagreed, saying his guilt results "from long-standing and reiterated practices" of illegal party financing.

Chirac's adopted daughter fought back tears as she lamented the ruling.

"The justice system has been very severe, but this is a fair and independent justice system. For the family, it's a great pain we have to accept," said Chirac's adopted daughter Anh Dao Traxel, her voice cracking with emotion as she spoke to reporters outside the courtroom.

"I think this decision is too, too severe for him and our family has more than ever to show solidarity and be supportive, for his health for the rest of his life," said Traxel, a former Vietnamese boat person. Chirac and his wife formally adopted Traxel after she came to Paris in 1979.

Chirac spokeswoman Benedicte Brissart declined to comment immediately, saying time was needed to go over the decision.

Chirac lawyer Georges Kiejman called the ruling disappointing and said he expected a decision later Thursday on whether Chirac would appeal.

"We have to take a step back and read this ruling, we have to speak of course with the main person involved (Chirac), and we will know tonight if he accepts this decision," Kiejman said. "What I hope is that this ruling doesn't change in any way the deep affection the French feel legitimately for Jacques Chirac."

The ruling is certain to bruise Chirac's public image. Leaving office in 2007 did wonders for his popularity: while polls showed that he was unpopular in his final years as president, those numbers soared afterward ? and even today, the avuncular former leader, who now focuses on charitable work, has been one of France's most popular public figures.

Critics had pushed for years to see Chirac answer charges of illegal party financing, frustrated by his presidential immunity and a sense that the political machine would never let the sensitive trial come to pass.

Jerome Karsenti, a lawyer for the anti-corruption group Anticor, which had argued against Chirac as a civil party to the case, said the reverberations could be widespread for France's political elites.

"This is a strong message from the court ? a message to all politicians of responsibility. It's also proof of a mature and transparent democracy that is today able to make a distinction and try a former president," Karsenti said.

"I see it as a historic and very important decision for the future of French democracy," he said.

The latest baring of France's underworld of back-room cronyism, corruption and political wrongdoing could loom large in voters minds as the French cast ballots in presidential and legislative elections next year.

The party that succeeded the RPR, President Nicolas Sarkozy's UMP party, and the opposition Socialist Party have seen their share of scandal recently. Two longtime Sarkozy allies have been targeted since September in a case of suspected kickbacks in a 1990s French defense deal with Pakistan. Sarkozy served as budget minister at the time, but his office and allies insist he was not involved.

In Thursday's ruling, the court found that 19 totally or partially fake jobs were created to benefit Chirac. "The case and the debates established that Jacques Chirac was the initiator and principal author of crimes of abuse of trust, embezzling and illegal conflict of interest," the ruling said.

A career politician, Chirac was a debonair master of the workings of public office. He modeled himself after longtime French leader Charles de Gaulle and was nicknamed "Le Bulldozer" early in his career for his determination and ambition.

France's last leader with memories of World War II, Chirac was the first to acknowledge the nation's responsibility for the deportation of Jews during the Holocaust. But he struggled to achieve reforms to the regulated economy and failed to defuse tensions between police and minority youth that exploded into riots in 2005.

US troops scramble to hand off last-minute security 'details' to Iraqis (The Christian Science Monitor)

Baghdad ? At the headquarters of the 447th Expeditionary Security Forces squadron, US troops are working 'round-the-clock to impart the last bits of knowledge they can to Iraqi forces before the clock runs out and their partnership comes to an end.

On Tuesday night they will link up with their Iraqi counterparts and together patrol the outer reaches of what???s left of the US military presence in Iraq. This includes the perimeter of the American-run airfield here, where the focus for the past 2-1/2 weeks has been on the finer points of how to keep a military base secure.

There have been lessons in the basics, too, as US troops answer last-minute questions from Iraqi soldiers on everything from the best way to check for bombs to the security benefits of simply sitting in silence, listening for unusual sounds.

RECOMMENDED: Doomsday war games: Pentagon's 3 nightmare scenarios

?It?ll be a new experience, and for some of them, almost scary,? says Staff Sgt. Donald Go Forth, of the departure of American forces. ?A couple of them don?t necessarily want us to leave ? they?ll be on their own.?

newslook

On this point, a handful of Iraqi soldiers concur as they prepare for a 12-hour overnight security shift here. They say they feel proud to finally take the reins of security for themselves, but they admit to some trepidation, too.

?We?d rather them to stay,? says an Iraqi soldier, who asked to remain anonymous for personal security reasons. ?We?ve depended on US soldiers for a long time. When they leave, we don?t know how it?s going to go.?

The training of Iraqi security forces has long been the crux of the American exit strategy in Iraq. As Iraqi security forces stand up, so the old Pentagon saw went, US forces will stand down. Now that time has come, and the outcome of that ultimate goal ??? an Iraqi force ready to provide for the country's security ??? remains a lingering question.

American commanders, for their part, say they would not presume to hazard a guess.

?I wish I knew the answer,? Gen. Frank Helmick, the No. 2 American commander in Iraq, told Pentagon reporters last week. ?We really don?t know what?s going to happen.?

It?s no secret that many senior Pentagon officials pushed hard for US troops to stay past the security agreement that requires all American military forces to be out of Iraq by year?s end. But US commanders on the ground report some positive signs that Iraqi troops are doing just fine.

To his frank admission, Helmick added a dash of optimism. ?We do know this: We do know that we have done everything we can in the time that we have been here for the Iraqi security forces to make sure that they have a credible security force.?

Though the small base here was hit with a double rocket explosion Sunday morning (which remaining US residents likened to the sound and physical thud of a loud door slam), security has been solid, US officials say. That's no no small feat, they add, given expectations that Iraqi insurgents will try to earn their bragging rights by taking final potshots at American forces.

Given ?all the doomsday briefs? during the run-up to Iraqi soldiers assuming security responsibility for the country, Col. Michael Gaal, vice commander of the 321st Air Expeditionary Wing, who will stay on as chief of staff of the Iraqi Training and Advisory Mission for Air after US forces depart ? says he has been ?pleasantly surprised? by the Iraqis' performance, particularly in securing the air base.

Direct fire that the base has sustained in recent weeks has ?all come from the traditional neighborhoods,? rather than new locations, which would have ?been suspicious,? Gaal adds, noting that Iraqis are currently teamed with US forces all along the perimeter, ?so we?re not wholly reliant? on them.

The performance of the Iraqi soldiers has been all the more impressive, US troops here note, given that the Iraqi security force unit with responsibility for airport perimeter security has only one pickup truck and one small Humvee. Iraqi soldiers here say they hope to be outfitted with night vision goggles and more vehicles in the weeks to come as they assume control of the soon-to-be-former US base here (which becomes the Baghdad Diplomatic Support Center).

With the exodus of US troops, ?there will be a lot of empty places,? the Iraqi soldier notes. The challenge, he adds, ?will be filling the emptiness when the Americans troops leave.?
